help with 8.1

I had to get  a new pc on 8.1 I have a Toshiba laptop (it was very affordable). I need to transfer from my old pc on XP to my new one on 8.1. thought it would be easy using Easy Transfer, but it won't work from xp to8.1 I do have a portable external HD; can I use that? And how? Thanks so much; I feel like I never saw a computer before.

Should be simple if it's just files, the external should be plug and play on both XP and 8.1.

I dumped my files onto a thumb drive and it loaded right up on my Toshiba.    I did XP to 7.

Well, the external did it's thing automatically on XP, but didn't load anything on the new laptop. I think it just took those files too.
