My grandfather became a US citizen thanks to the US military (specifically the Army).

Same here, served in WWII.  Ship was blown up by Japs but he survived.  Never met him though, as he died a year before I was born

Mine did as well.  Let me know when you're at the park again and I'll buy you a beer.  You are the guy in the Evolution33 video, right?

Dad of Frau was signalman on a DE in the Battle of the Atlantic, and did some pretty hairy stuff in the Mediterranean off of N Africa, including shoot down a German torpedo bomber with the bridge gun during an air raid on the convoy they were escorting.  I don't think that happened very often.  I had uncles/great uncles on both sides in Korea (one in the Royal Canadian Air Force, one in the US Army).  Various other more distant relatives in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1, though they all died long before I was around.  So as totally unsuitable by nature as I might be for military service, I do admire what all these guys did.

Almost forget to mention that Mrs. Mitlen is a vet as well.   We have a "veteran" family.  My dad was in the S. Pacific (Navy) in WWII;  father-in-law was a Navy "lifer"; uncles at Iwo and with Patton in Europe as well as great uncle pilot w/8th AF.   Beaucoup cousins served and uncles who served in peace time (if there is such a thing).   It was what we were expected to do  ...  kind of like jury duty.   Couple of us even got drafted (LOL).

That would be great.  I'll be at Nats Town 4/15 and 4/17.  Thinking about 4/14 as well, but I'll have to call in sick from work for that so I'm on the fence..

My great uncle (my Dad's mom's brother) retired a full bird Colonel in the USAF. He served as a bomber pilot over N.Africa during WWII. He flew B-26's and also B-29's. He once had to crash land his bomber using the jungle canopy to slow his plane down enough to land it. I know he served with S.A.C. also as a bomber pilot. During Vietnam he worked at the Pentagon and spoke to President Nixon quite regularly.

My Dad's brother retired a SMSgt from the USAF. I'm not really sure what all he did, but I do know he worked on Air Force One for quite some time while stationed at Andrews.

Another of my Dad's brothers was a aircraft mechanic during Vietnam. He worked on F-100's and was stationed at Bien Hoa Air Base.

My Dad tried to enlist to go to Vietnam but he couldn't get his BP low enough. He said he laid on a table for a couple hours before they finally told him to go home. That would have been around 1969-70 I reckon.

Many thanks to all those who served in our military.

I'm working in Dc as a contractor of course! lol.  In the puzzle palace and enjoying life as much as possible.  I'm planning to move to the lake to ensure my quality of life goes up....as it should for us all.  I'll just have to drive a little further to get to the games!

My family has a tradition of "missing" wars. My grandfather volunteered when he came of age in 1944, and entered the air force. Which was a little strange, because he got airsick every time; they made him navigator so that when he puked he wouldn't hit anyone else, and eventually he became a mechanic. But the war ended before he got deployed.

My father was born on the fourth of July, which through luck or conspiracy got one of the very last lotto numbers in Vietnam, so he was never drafted.

I think my mother's done some work translating stuff for the armed forces, including some things which I probably can't talk about.

Is there a dance tonight?  Pulling into the new hacienda down in the Danger Zone® we noticed some very well dressed Marines and their dates walking on the streets.  Any ideas?
