Was just coming to post this as well. 8.9, wow. I've got to imagine the tsunami caused by this is going to cause horrific damage in the Pacific. Reports are over a 30 foot tsunami smashed into Japan.

I recalled reading a 7.1 or so hit Japan in this exact same location a couple days ago. Guess it triggered this one. I'm afraid the death toll of this quake, right now just at one, is going to be massive. After all the strange stuff happening lately spelling on the doomsayers and apocalypse now folk, this is just going to be more ammunition in their insanity.

The Wall Street Journal has a good write-up: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704399804576193650432765520.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Fire at the turbine building of a nuke plant.  No radiation released.  The reactors simply heats water under pressure, then the superhot water is pumped to a separate set of pipes that heats water to generate steam to drive the turbines, as I understand it.

a lot of pictures here:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/photos-of-japans-earthquake-and-tsunami/article1938156/

there are a reports that a packed passenger train is missing.

Conflicting reports of problems cooling a couple of nuclear plants in the area, large scale evacuations are on-going.  I've heard 4-6' waves hitting Hawaii.  Midway and Wake got hit with high waves too.  Very sad.

FOX News' website has an aerial video of the wall of water hitting Japan. It looks like a mudslide sweeping through ravaging everything in its path.

So terrible.

Thoughts are with the Japanese.

Also, if you're in California, get the hell out of the way. They're expecting massive waves to start hitting soon.

"up to" 7 feet.  Some counties are closing beaches and piers, which is probably smart, but it's not like California is going to get washed out to sea or anything.  I would imagine there's more danger to unsuspecting oceangoers than to anyone on land.

Hmm. Ok... I heard Hawaii was getting 14 foot surges.

California must of been let off easy.

Good to know.

Yeah. It was mostly Japan, New Zealand, Guam, Hawaii and some Russian islands that were going to get "major" tsunamis.

yeah cali will be fine ... i have a lot of friends there posting pictures on facebook or through e-mails and texts ... looks like it could get pretty rough out there, but nothing too serious i don't think (and i hope not).

thoughts and prayers with everyone involved in the tragedy.  makes you think, what would happen if that hit us.

p.s. that storm last night that hit us was awful.

Tsunamis depend on anumber of factors, including the slope of the offshore sea bottom.  A wave that migh be only 1 foot at a bouy on the high seas might be huge if it comes ashore in the right spot.  Hawaii I think has a history of bad tsunamis.

I was hearing last night that if the earthquake was a few more yards closer to the shore, the destruction would've been 2x larger because of how shallow the waters were. (or something like that)

A series of videos here:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theenvoy/20110311/ts_yblog_theenvoy/watch-raw-footage-of-the-japan-earthquake-and-tsunami

The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake triggered a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them more than magnitude 6.0. In the early hours of Saturday, a magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck the central, mountainous part of the country — far from the original quake's epicenter.

2012.

I have a feeling that super volcano in Yellowstone is going to erupt soon.

If that does... welp, see ya later.
