Surprised Hood ranks lower than Lombardozzi.

Suspect that won't be the cast next year.

Yeah once he moves up in the system a bit he should be.

19 people's crowd sourced results for top ten position prospects at nationalsprospects.com :
10. Eury Perez (28)
9. Michael Taylor (33)
8. Tyler Moore (56)
7. Chris Marrero (74)
6. Destin Hood (87)
5. Steve Lombardozzi (95)
4. Brian Goodwin (103)
3. Derek Norris (150)
2. Anthony Rendon (152)
1. Bryce Harper (190)

That list is really messed up.  No Cole, Peacock, Solis, or Meyer.  Also, everyone outside of the top 4 are too high.  The voting for this must have mostly been done by people who clearly know nothing about the Nats prospects.

To see our prospect list broken down liek that - position players only and pitchers only - to me shows that the farm system still needs a ton of work.  I see a star in Harper, a good player in Rendon, a solid regular in Norris, and then a bunch question marks.

Rendon is going to be a star.  I have read some reports from analysts who say that his upside is .320- .330 with 20-25 homers.  If you add in his great defense then that equals star to me.

I'll wait for him to take some ABs before declaring him a star. I think he has a lot of potential but he may flop, you never know.
But to Tyler's point, a lot of our talent is already up, Espi, Ramos, Dezzi, Stras, Zimm, etc
But they're still very young

Out of that top 5, I see one utility player (Lombo), two high upside players who need development and may disappoint (Norris, Goodwin), a regular who may be a star (Rendon), and a star (Harper).  That is a whole mess of positional talent.  Hood is a notch below Norris and Goodwin but has less of an upside than Goodwin and needs more development than Norris. Taylor is more of a long shot at this point but has high potential.  I doubt you will see more than 5 systems with better top positional talent, even if you exclude Harper.

Phil Wood on MASN this AM said the Nats have high regard for Colton Willems. I though he retired this spring.

10. Rafael Martin (14)
9. Danny Rosenbaum (28)
8. Brad Meyers (44)
7. Robbie Ray (68)
6. Alex Meyer (90)
5. Matt Purke (106)
4. Tommy Milone (110)
3. Sammy Solis (114)
2. A.J. Cole (142)
1. Brad Peacock (166)

There's the top ten list for pitchers not near as clear cut this time.

Well he was 11th in that list. That's about where I'd put him. Top 15 for sure.

That's absurd to have Purke and Meyer that low.

http://www.masnsports.com/byron_kerr/2011/12/hector-nelo-impressing-nationals-with-stuff.html

25 year old Hector Nelo in AA throws 100 mph.  Needs to work on fastball command and his slider.  Could be a future closer or late inning type bullpen for us (HRod redux?).

It's a good sign of depth that a guy like that doesn't register on these lists.

John Sickels just released his Top 20 list for the Nats. Here's the overview:

Quote from: John Sickels
I like this system.

You can't go wrong at the top, where Harper and Rendon are the foundation of a terrific offense, and both Goodwin and Norris (and possibly Hood and Marrero) can develop into regulars. There are some very interesting role player types backing them up. Lombardozzi could start for some teams and will be a strong utility player at worst. If he doesn't pan out for some reason, you have Hague, Martinson, Kobernus, Kelso, and Walters who could. Finding solid college infielders who can be utility men and contribute something on offense seems to be a focus.

The pitching group has questions and the cautious grades for some of them reflect this, but there is a lot of upside. Cole, Peacock, and Meyer all have the ability to be staff anchors. So do Purke and Solis if their health allows. Milone deserves a real shot no matter what the radar guns say, and Rosenbaum isn't far behind him. Turnbull, Dupra, and Hill are college arms from the 2011 draft that could follow in their footsteps.

love this:

Quote
1) Bryce Harper, OF, Grade A: 80 power, 80 arm, 80 hype, 80 arrogance...but produces the numbers to back that hype and arrogance up. He is not just a power masher; he's got great instincts, and I have seen him make adjustments within at-bats more rapidly than most major leaguers can. Even Christopher Hitchens would believe in Harper.

Hitch would have made fun of his Mormonism.

It's great that the system has come such a long way.  Though I think by saying that, I have cemented my status as SSS.

LAC!  Rizzo suckz!

Interesting that, even after Harper and Rendon, Sickels seems more bullish about the position players than the pitchers.  That is the opposite of most of the other evaluations of the system.  I think what separates him is he still is enthusiastic about Norris and even thinks he improved his stock this year by becoming an acceptable catcher.

So, I put together a composite rating of all the rankings (WNFF, BA, Fangraphs and Minor League Ball) and 'reverse engineered' the rankings. So, a 1st place vote gets you 30 points, 2nd gets 29 and so on and so on.

Here's the results.

1. Bryce Harper - OF (130)
2. Anthony Rendon - IF (116)
3. A.J. Cole - SP (110)
4. Brad Peacock - SP (105)
5. Matt Purke - SP (102)
6. Alex Meyer - SP (100)
7. Brian Goodwin - OF (99)
8. Derek Norris - C (94)
9. Sammy Solis - SP (81)
10. Steve Lombardozzi - IF (79)
11. Destin Hood - OF (63)
12. Robbie Ray - SP (61)
13. Chris Marrero - 1B (58)
14. Tom Milone - SP (39)
15. Michael Taylor - OF (30)
16. Matt Skole - 3B (26)
17. David Freitas - C (22)
18. Jeff Kobernus - 2B (22)
19. Daniel Rosenbaum - SP (21)
20. Rick Hague - IF (20)
21. Zach Walters - SS (20)
22. Tyler Moore - 1B (16)
23. Josh Smoker - RP (15)
24. Erik Komatsu - OF (13) - Rule 5 of Cardinals
25. Eury Perez - OF (12)
26. Kevin Keyes - OF (11)
27. Jason Martinson - SS (11)
28. Brad Meyers - SP (10) - Rule 5 of Yankees
29. Wirkin Estevez - SP (9)
30. Kylin Turnbull - SP (4)
31. Jack McGeary - SP (2)
32. Randolph Oduber - OF (1)

Nice, I was thinking about doing something similar to this, but I won't complain about not having to add it all up.

I think this skews the rankings, since the 10th ranked player in WNFF gets 20 points, the 11th ranked player 19;  In a poll with only 10 rankings, #11 gets Zero, a severe penalty.

You may get different results if instead you average the ranking for each player.

Where do you guys think the system ranks? I may have reached saying number one, but the top-end talent is certainly close
