Cached error reports? Yeah go nuts on that.

Things that require adminstrator access be a bit more careful with.

Don't blame me if you go overboard though.

PANats I think I've just found my new disclaimer. I constantly get calls/emails/texts from my family, friends, co-workers, etc about computer problems and I'm pretty nice about it so I don't mind. Once in a blue moon however I tell someone to try something and they freak it up then try to tell me it's my fault. Thus I usually fix their computer for free, which takes up my time and sucks.

One pass with ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download) usually frees up a nice amount of space safely.  If you want to disable hibernation, start > run > powercfg.cpl > hibernation tab > disable it.

Recommend unchecking the optional Yahoo toolbar when installing ccleaner.  Aside from that, it's totally free.

exploring @anywhere some more.

Huffington Post has my Twitter feed embedded in it, and I can post to it, without leaving the HuffPost Website to do it, and without any pop-up "share" windows, like Facebook Connect has.

Its really nice. and supposedly it is as simple as adding a few liines of Javascript to your web page. so theoretically, if Chief wanted to, he could monkey around with a Tweetbox here on the forum.

Trying out Lunascape to see if it is any faster and will take xpi plugins. I don't want to unzip an xpi every 3 days for all the noscript updates.

Copied over my gecko profile: check
Noscript installed instantly: check
Faster than firefox: check

Lunascape is sick. You can switch between the engine for Firefox, IE, or Safari on different TABS of the same WINDOW. Couldn't get hulu to run under Firefox's gecko, but Safari's Webkit works very well. Love it. Love it.

There's a contest out there for the WORLD'S GREATEST SALESPERSON BY OGILVY.  YOU win a fellowship at the company and a trip to Cannes.

Here's one video from the site.  Don't let your kid watch it unless you already own video games.

Does anyone know of a good utility to partition a drive to avoid bad sectors?

I have a 1.5TB drive with some bad sectors and I'd like to be able to continue to use the drive, even if it's just as a 1 TB or even 500GB or 300GB drive.  I want to wall off a a block of the drive that's good and just avoid using the part with the bad sectors completely.

I wouldn't recommend putting anything important on such a drive regardless, but any partitioning tool should be sufficient as long as you're sure of where the bad sectors are located and give them a wide berth.

So can someone tell me how I can set up my home computer as a proxy so that I can browse the web filter free from work?

I'm guessing i'd have to use dyndns but not sure how that'd work behind a router.

http://www.linquist.net/geek/proxy

Seems like a good place to start, and more or less echoes what I recommended to you via PM.  If you want to work around NAT/Router problems, just set up Logmein Hamachi (www.hamachi.cc) and use that interface/IP instead of your home machine's external IP.

I can't get it.  I have no problem getting a dyndns account and an updated set up, but I can never connect.  The router is set up to forward all ports to my mac, and I can ping my machine through the dyndns name, but ssh times out.

I have the machines firewall set to allow http, FTP, and ssh.  I can access everything using the local ip, but nothing at all using my dyndns.

I'm starting to think maybe comcast blocks the ports?

Yahoo Pulse is live.

Its yahoo's version of Social Networking. seems pretty nice so far. you can integrate Facebook and Twitter with it.

more like a Social Network aggregator, than an actual social network itself.

as much as I thought Google Buzz had a chance to make some noise...Pulse, on first look, totally beats the crap out of it. seriously. and that's coming from teh resident rabid blind google fanboy.

I'll explore it more thoroughly and update my report.

VideoLan 1.1.0 is out.  Major update from 1.0.5, apparently.

As far as I know the only major change is hardware decode support, but even that apparently only works reliably on nvidia hardware, so that leaves about 70% of the market out in the cold

So, what are my essential programs to download as soon as I get my new system up and running?  So far on my list is FF, and MSE.

It came with one of my games.  Required for the game.  Runs on the CPU if you don't have an nvidia card, I believe.  Or maybe it just runs on the 5850 anyway.  I know AMD has said their cards are capable of running PhysX, but I think nvidia locks out 3rd parties.

It looks like a good replacement from one of my favorite Mac apps, Smultron.  Unfortunately Smultron was kind of abandoned

It's not shown in my list but PuTTY is my go-to app for any kind of terminal/SSH stuff.  I just dropped the exe in my system32 folder so I could type "putty" from a run box to launch it

^^ and yes that's the right link.  As the author notes:

2010-05-17 Google listing confusion

Several users have pointed out to us recently that the top Google hit for "putty" is now not the official PuTTY site but a mirror that used to be listed on our Mirrors page.

The official PuTTY web page is still where it has always been:

Oh, that's right, I forgot some OSes don't have SSH built in :P

Oh wait, I'm going to be a Windows guy now :(

I still think Apple makes great consumer devices, and I like their OS.  Just sort of got tired of the pricey-for-what-it-is hardware.

Maybe I'll try to Hackintosh the PC ;)

Cygwin ssh works very well. I like mwm because its so old school. Windows firewall and rsync are having a fight, though.
