So can someone explain OPS to me?  On base plus slugging.  How is slugging calculated and what makes OPS a relevant statistic to compare hitters?

Lastings Milledge posting a robust .575 OPS for Pittsburgh.

That is going to go down after today's 0-3 performance. To be fair to him, he got a walk which was just his 3rd since joining the Pirates.

Where are the Ronnie Belliard haters now? I stopped hating 2 weeks ago and now I can finally enjoy the Ronnie Belliard era.

Belliard needs regular playing time, otherwise he sucks.

Slugging= total bases/AB's

It measures a player's power.

I think slugging % is the total bases/at-bats. OPS is a good stat because it judges one's ability to hit for power as well as draw walks.

I still think he's done. I like him but he's running out of gas IMHO. Nice to see him being productive though.

I hope we get an upgrade over Belliard next year.

OBP measures Contact(i.e. singles hitters) and patience (Walks). using just OBP to compare skews things in favor of Contact Hitters that take a lot of Walks (i.e. Nick Johnson), and makes for an uneven comparison when comparing a Power Hitter with a Leadoff-type hitter.

Slugging measures Power (extra base hits). using just Slugging to compare skews things in favor of big Mashers that don't take a lot of walks. and again, makes for an uneven comparions.

OPS is the best of both worlds. add OBP and Slugging together, and you get a more complete and even comparison of any hitter.

at least that is how I understand it.

Mike Morse, who just blasted his 6th HR tonight of of knuckle-baller RA Dickey.  Batting .331 since being traded to Washington.

Belliard's contract is up. he won't be re-signed.
