J.D. Martin :pimp:

6.2 IP 6 H 2 ER 1 BB 2 K; 2/3 with a Single, Triple, and 2 RBIs

Pete Orr had a walk-off 2-run single

Yeah I was listening to the game earlier, Martin was killing it at the plate.

The Nationals released a handful of minor league players, among them the most notable are Greg Veloz (acquired in Hernandez trade last season) and Dani Arias.  Will Atwood also retired, which is pretty shocking to me, but I guess considering how much these guys make it isn't that surprising.

Damn, Harrisburg is struggling against Philadelphia's AA team.  1 hit for the team through 5.

Dan Rosenbaum had 7 Ks in his Hagerstown debut and let up 2 hits and 0 runs.

Eury Perez starting with Hagerstown this season and Marcus Jones is back after his season ending injury last year.  I'm expecting big things from both this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if Perez got sent to Vermont if he is struggling by the time SS starts.

Went to the Chiefs game tonight and it was a nice win to start the season off.

The Good: A three way tie between JD Martin, Pete Orr and the weather. Martin pitched extremely well in what turned out to be a hit fest in the unseasonably warm Syracuse weather. Wearing the 1961 throwbacks to commemorate this years 50th Anniversary, the Chiefs started the season with a bang scoring 8 runs on 12 hits and were sparked by Orr, who was 3-4 and scored three runs.

The Bad: Jason Maxwell was 0-4 to continue what has been a shaky spring so far at the plate and also misplayed a ball hit to him in center. He didnt show a lot of patience, making first pitch outs on three of his at bats.

The Ugly: Atahualpa Severino's final line: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB.

Oh yeah, the Taco Bell hitter of the night struck out, earning us in the crowd a free taco.

Mmm..taco's.

cachemoney, thanks for the report and welcome to the forums! Very glad to have so astute a reporter on the ground in Syracuse. :) I only have one question...

Why was Taco Bell giving away free things if a guy struck out? Was it an opposing team hitter?

Thanks for the welcome and sorry I wasnt clear on the taco, I just started thinking about tacos and lost concentration.

Yeah, Andy Tracy from Lehigh Valley was the strikeout victim on a K by Joel Peralta to start off the ninth.

Have a full list? I'm nervously expecting my boy Ronnie Labrie to be on it.

Per NFA:

Quote
Released: RHP Ryan Speier, C Scott Thomas, 2B Greg Veloz, 3B Angel Gonzalez, 3B Yeurys Tejeda, SS Dani Arias, OF Carl Loadenthal, OF Pedro Powell, OF Jay Sferra, OF Sean Smith

Labrie is still around.  He had an OK year last year, I would imagine at the least they would keep him around for filler.

EDIT:  according to his MiLB player page, he is assigned to Vermont right now.  He will probably get at least one more year to prove himself.  I'm rooting for him, I always root for the guys from VA/DC.

Eh, not what I was hoping for. We really need Maxwell to pull it together, it's not too late for him with no RF option in site this year. I fear that if he can't make it up this year and shows he belongs he may not be around much longer.

Not a strong finish for Scott Olsen.  He had a great first four innings, then he fell apart in the 5th.

Olsen's final line: 6.1 ip, 8 h, 4 er, bb, 4 k

Not an implosion, but I'd like to see better.

Yeah him and Colten Williams had great first games last season, then fell off a cliff.

Both of those guys have the ability, its all about the consistency with them though.

Smoker has 7 K's in his dayview but did give up 3 runs in 4 innings.
E. Perez went 2/4 and SB(I think he's gonna be a good one)
D. Hood went 1/4

Kinda pathetic that those guys are still in Hagerstown, isn't it? The article about how Chico is in AA makes me think they should cut more fat and actually challenge these guys.
