What evidence is there to say they wouldn't have done even better with an extra bullpen arm or bench bat.

That's a  :clown:  question, bro.

Given that they actually IMPROVED their winning % after the deadline, I'd say they correctly assessed the talent on the team as being more than good enough to get us there.  Sure, it's not over yet, but who wouldn't have taken the position we're in now over an unknown result if one could choose between the two?

Didn't anyone ever tell you that it's impossible to prove a negative?

That's my point. You can't one way or another prove if it would help or hurt.

It's being presented as fact.

Nats are in first on September 18th, 2012: better than September 18 2011, or 2010, or 2009, or 2008, or any Washington team since 1933. That's good. The starters are good, the relievers are good, and the field lineup has sustained injuries that would have crushed other teams. The Nats are in first.

Given that they actually IMPROVED their winning % after the deadline...

Two four game series against the Astros and Cubs helped.

...I'd say they correctly assessed the talent on the team as being more than good enough to get us there...

If by "get us there" you mean the playoffs, sure we're going and we may even go deep, but there is no such thing as "good enough", there is always room to improve..

Natitude and the comment "nice while it lasted" DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE!  ITS AN OXYMORON!

Unless you have the best players at every position in the majors, you can in theory improve.  But practically speaking it's not just a fantasy exercise.

I just want a team that is good enough to not get beat down like what happened this past weekend.

What's Natitude? "The pennant is just laying there, waiting for us to take it". (Joe Cronin, August 8, 1933).

You want a team that never gets swept in a series?

Not in a statement series when we have a chance to crush the hopes of our closest rivals.

It's not controllable.  Two games were tightly contested, and we got screwed on a critical umpiring error that helped the Braves to win one of those.

Natitude: how about "If [someone] comes in hard to second, I'll step on his face".

That's generalized from Buddy Myer's promise to Ben Chapman, Yankee CF, at the beginning of what became one of the biggest brawls of all time. Eventually had 300 Nats fans leaped onto the field to help the Nats fight the Yankees; Bill Dickey grabbing a baseball bat until someone smart dragged him back to the dugout; a fist-fight between the Nats' ace pitcher and Chapman in the tunnel leading to the club house; Metropolitan Police arresting Chapman, who had hit a detective...and more.

You guys do realize we are still 5.5 games over the Braves and finished the season 10-8 against them right?  At the beginning of the year we all would have drooled over the prospects of being exactly where we are now.  Frankly, I doubt any of us would have believed that we would be sitting on the best record in baseball on September 19th.  So everyone take a deep breath, remember it's a long season, and that the end result is what's important not the little snapshots of what happens over any given week.

Why would you say that moments before the lead is about to be set back down to 5?

yup. back to 5 games. Braves off tomorrow so if Nats can't find a way to win their lead will slim to only 4.5 games.

Why would the playoffs be any different than regular season games?

Pitching is better in the playoffs.
