he's following your advice and it isn't working too well.

Those were curves.  His slider is his best pitch.

These are the types of days when I REALLY hated being a catcher.

Mock looks tired. He can't throw anything for a strike. His fastball is moving all over the place. Earlier in the game he was throwing it 90 and right on the corners.

Why won't he just throw his 4-seam fastball?

Why throw that pitch on a 3-1 count? Throw your 4-seamer down the middle!!!

He fell apart. Walked 3 batters this inning alone. I can't stand pitchers that are afraid of the strike zone.

ok, so he wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible.

and he burned out in the 5th inning.  I wouldn't send him down just yet, keep him up here and see how he does in his next start.

that said, what was it about Mock that made him MORE ready for a call-up than Balester?

No win possible for Mock. I did see some good things, but he doesn't look quite ready yet. Maybe another start or two will be good for him.

He is playing with house money.  He has pitched pretty badly all day, just getting lucky on hard hit double plays.

He petered out very quickly. His fastball was consistently around 90 and he was hitting his spots nicely early in the game. It was also a pretty straight fastball with little movement.

Right now his fastball is sinking and diving all over the place and he's lost movement. It's like he's unintentionally throwing cutters and sinkers rather than throwing his normal straight 4-seam fastball.

I don't think he made a good case for himself today. He will be optioned after today's game to make room for Clippard.

He was pitching a lot better than Balester when he was called up. No more than 3 runs in a game in his last 9 starts. Including only 8 walks.

Mock is much more closer to being ML-ready than Balester. Balester gives up a ton of HRs and he has poor control.

I doubt this is true, but maybe that extremely short outing the other day by Mock messed w/ him.
