If this team is serious about being a contender, it shouldn't matter.
Why not? If you push the clock on FA/Arbitration back, you get another year of him which makes it easier to be a contender for one more year before having to deal with the potential monster contract. This is exactly the move the team should make if it is intent on being a contender for a longer period of time.
