"and now just one skinny game ahead of the Nationals..." says Gary Thorne.
Nothing would kill Mets fans more than to finish behind the Nats.

so that game that we have to play against the dodgers (only if relevant) will that be played if we are half a game behind the mets at the end of the season?

Could be...I don't watch Mets games much...actually, never unless they are playing the Nats. Just heard the first name, thought of Thorne. Keith Hernandez, of course, is unmistakable. And smart.

I don't think so.  It will only be played if it has playoff implications, I believe.

Being serious.

It's true. Think of last September.

Thinking about the lineup, the key to a better 2012 will be 2B/SS hitting. If Espinosa and Desmond can hit even respectably -- not Ernie Banks great but just respectably -- the team will be much better. I think Marrero will hold 1B, Morse stays in LF. The OF would be pretty decent, out of Ankiel, Werth, Morse, Nix, Gomes. The team would still need a big HR hitter, a Joe Hardy/Roy Sievers/Harmon Killebrew/Frank Howard, but maybe Harper is that kid.

This is why, for me at least, Harper is the key to making that jump. Assuming Stras, JZimm and the other young arms develop as expected, Harper can be that one big bat that can make the whole offense go. If he can be that true cleanup hitter, he will make everybody around him better.

Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 69th win, each season:

2005 - 31st August (132nd match of season)
2011 - 13th September (146th match of season)
2006 - 23rd September (156th match of season)
2007 - 23rd September (156th match of season)
2010 - 3rd October (162nd match of season)*
[2008 - finished 59-102]
[2009 - finished 59-103]

*needless to say, their final win of that season - it was away to the Mets, like last night's win, and required 14 innings.

Can't do .500 Only 161 games so we are above it with 81 wins meaning we would have to win 12 of the remaining 15. Let's do it
