Dude, you've really got to switch out those shopfloor reflectors with some Ace of Spades cards.  And maybe get a Fugazi bumper sticker for the top tube.

Fugazi never did any merch, remember?

NICE BIKE.  Put a baseball card in the spokes to make the funny sound!  ;)

Averaged a little over 13mph on the way in this morning.  It helped I didn't dip below 20mph for a good mile and half long stretch.  The ride home will be tiring though.

So, I totally bonked out today on the way home and had to make an emergency stop at the food booth at the Lincoln Memorial.  After scarfing down a tiny $5 pretzel and a $4 diet Pepsi I decided to finally quit being a cheap bastard and stocked up on some of these bad boys:

Lance Armstrong is a total assbag that should eat a bullet, but these things are totally tasty.  Sure, they're a $1 a pop after getting them for cheap off of Amazon, but they should keep the bonking away.

Strope Waffels!!!

If I kept one of those in my back pockets of a lycra jersey they would be inedible by the time I reached for them. Hot gooey mess.

They're definitely delicate but they seem to do the trick when I feel like I'm about to bonk.  I plan on keeping a couple in my seat bag just in case.

They're little waffles that come in three flavors - vanilla (:az:), strawberry, and honey.  Like I said, they're delicate but they're delicious and seem to do the trick.  I'm curious what Gburg thinks about them.

I'd need to have one hell of a mega-pimp job to get me to undergo that every day.

What's more pathetic - driving a $70,000 car and sitting in that crap everyday or knowing that the 380lb dude on bike just blew past you going 25mph on the bridge?

After a near total crash I finally broke down and bought SPD pedals and shoes to replace my old cages.  Actually found a pair in my size (EU 48) that didn't have laces, had the lockdown strap, and, most importantly, were on sale!

Going West on the Custis along 66 is great if hill climbing is your thing.  Once Custis ends at Four Mile Run/W&OD (can't remember which it is there, but it's all the same trail) you have a gentle downhill coast all the way to Shirlington.  Here, you have to cut through Shirlington, stop by Cap City Brewpub to refresh, then climb up and over the 395 bike trail overpass and down into Parkfairfax.   A 1/4mile along a street reconnects you to Four Mile Run trail on the other side.    That last part of the trail is grungy - along the creek which is paved and underneath a series of bridges - Route 1, railroad, GW Parkway as you suddenly pop up on the Mount Vernon Trail.

I don't know if I would do it for the scenery overall.  But the Custis trail's hills are a worthy adversary.  You can do it in reverse and the hills are much less difficult.

Just found this thread, so that's why the old reply.  Custis is a beast going west from Rosslyn - Glebe or so.  It's a little hilly after that, but once you go under Glebe you only have one or two bad ones left.  Going east is a lot easier.

Matter of fact, Custis' hills are why I haven't committed to riding into work yet - I hate the idea of having to conquer those hills every night on the way home.  That, and I can't figure out which bridge to take from Rosslyn - I'd like to take the TR, but then I don't know where to go once I get to the Kennedy Center.  Could take Key, but then I'm doing M St. the whole way.

MDS - you commute on M through Georgetown?  Just seems like a good way to have a close encounter with some needledick's 5-series.

No, I take this route starting in the Danger Zone®:

15th Street -> Crystal Drive -> Mt. Vernon Trail -> 14th Street Bridge -> M Street -> Nats Park

Only if you would like getting hit by cars, I think.

I actually think the best way might be across the TR, through the Kennedy Center to VA Ave, then down VA ave downtown.

A friend rode a bike on Whitehurst once, took the exit off Key Bridge from Virginia when she saw a very slow moving car with flashers on protecting a mama duck with like 8 ducklings waddling down onto the freeway.  It took like 45 minutes, but they made it (with a lot of road rage from behind from B&Ts trying to make happy hour at Madhatters).

grumble . . . the NHL ran over Sunday night on NBCSportsnetwork so my DVR missed the last 15 minutes or so of Liege- Bastogne- Liege.  Looked like Nibali had it in the bag . . .

Tomorrow is the first day of commuting with the SPD pedals. Did a quick test ride today with them and it looks like all systems go. Can't wait to see how it goes tomorrow.

Got the bike put together today finally.  Hoping to go for a ride tomorrow or Wednesday.  Still would like to get a road bike but haven't been able to find something I can afford.  Gonna have to wait a little longer for that.

Are you good with bike repairs?  If so, I'd look at an 80s Raleigh steel road bike.  You can find them pretty cheap on eBay as long as you're not looking for an 56 or 58cm.
