If anyone actually goes to arb it'll be Morse.  The oraganization has made it pretty clear what they think of him in the past.

Hopefully Morse gets ~$5m.

MLBTraderumors estimates his 2012 salary at $3.9M. He earned $1.05M in 2011.

Some even think his bat no better than Guzman's.

No, the Nats filed at 5, Lannan filed at 5.7.  I don't see what's funny about that, I'm sure he didn't pull the number out of his ass.  It's likely based on a number of comparables.

Someone explain the arbitration process to me, considering it's always been one thing that's confused me.

the arbiter can either award him what the nats offered, or what he asked for, that's it.  They can't make up their own figure, so yeah, $5 million is the floor.

Thanks, makes sense. Was surprised they couldn't come to a "middle figure" if you will.

Hopefully Morse gets ~$5m.

If Morse wins and gets a contract (non guaranteed) worth $1.5 million more than the team wants to pay him, Rizzo is certainly going to start looking at trade options.  If Morse wins and we sign Fielder, Morse is at risk of being cut if we don't find a trade partner.  The chances of the team losing are slim, but the only time they lost in the past they cut Hill in spring training.  Now Hill and Morse are hardly comparable, but this team wants the message to sink in that you accept our terms or you get cut.

This situation is just very unique. The Nats are in uncharted territory with Morse and probably don't know where to start. This isn't like a proven player that has been stable throughout his career so far, this is a player whom has exploded in a very short period of time. The Nats offered a 350% raise and he is looking for a 500% one. How many teams in arbitration pay out raises in excess of 300%? I bet the list is very short.

I think they'll reach some sort of agreement now that they know where both sides stand. This situation isn't as odd as Lincecum with the Giants, but it is still very rare in nature.

I don't really see any evidence of that (yet). I see evidence that the Lerners are pretty hardnosed on spending and contractual negotiations, so they tend to roll the dice on arbitration more often than many teams. But this process is fairly straightforward. And there are specific formulas used to value a player. A team isn't going to cave on that simply because they want to avoid arbitration. The only financial motivation for the team to find a middle ground is if they believe they are risk of losing big based on the numbers.

That said, financial considerations are certainly factored in, but it is about the bottom line, not a matter of refusing to accept what is offered. Hill was a completely different situation than Morse. Hill was dead weight, and when he won arbitration, he was overpaid dead weight. So cutting him was an option. The team may find that Morse is overpaid at $5M, but you don't cut a player like Morse outright like you cut Hill. Trading to trim payroll may be explored if that is a concern, but I still wouldn't see that about trying to enforce some code of contact, just looking at the budget. So, we'll wait and see. I actually think they are likely to find a middle ground with Morse, unless Morse is happy to roll the dice on 5M content to lose. The arbitors could go either way there.
