Yes, and the consumer preview will be available for download after the announcement.  This has been known for weeks...

Come on PC, you're slacking :whip: :mg:

The EXACT time had been unknown until today.  This is also a live blog of the happening.

...and they should have made it available for download today, though.  I've been checking around all day to see if they had.

Psh, excuses.  Why didn't you use your extra 8 gigs to run a prediction model? :P

A proper prediction model would require at least 32GB.  16GB isn't nearly enough!

So far I am not feeling it.  I think I can comfortably say that unless MS provides an option to bring back the start menu and disable the tablet stuff in the final version of 8, I will be sticking with 7.  Metro might be great for a tablet, but it's just an impediment for a desktop.

As the resident Microsoft fanboi, I'd so love to come here and scream "PITCH PERFECT!  The greatest OS since Windows 7!!!"...yet I can't.   :icon_frown:

First, I still have no problem with the Start Screen.  You can still pin things to the task bar (on the desktop) and can add shortcuts to the desktop (of the desktop).  Once you're in the desktop, you're in the desktop.  The fact that the Metro UI exists is irrelevant.

My problem is the "default" Metro apps!  The Pinball game doesn't even load, period and Solitaire is a NIGHTMARE!  You click on a card and it doesn't move or highlight. You click again or try to drag and it may or may not highlight or drag. It probably won't.  How do you screw up Solitaire???  >:(

And where is Minesweeper???

The difference being that Vista is a vastly superior operating system both technically and functionally, but was hindered by poor 3rd party driver support and relatively high (for the time) system requirements that were all but ignored by OEMs in the rush to slap a "Vista Compatible" sticker on everything.

Windows 8 on the other hand is a very incremental upgrade over 7 under the hood and will run on just about anything (same requirements as 7, which are the same as Vista), but offers little that is compelling to the average desktop/laptop user...  unless you really like Metro, I guess.

Like I said, I'd happily upgrade to 8 if MS added an option to revert to classic/desktop mode with every trace of Metro disabled, but if I'm forced to deal with that, no thanks.

Like this...use the taskbar and shortcuts and never (or rarely) go to the Start Screen:

Unfortunately you can't avoid the start screen if you want to search.

I think I fixed it.  The computer I installed it on used integrated graphics (the old style integrated graphics not the new gpu on the cpu kind of integrated graphics) and the WEI graphics scores were very low, 3.1 was the lowest and that's really low considering the rest of the computer's components (Phenom II X4 830 CPU, 8GB DD3, 120GB SSD)  I installed a discrete video card (a relatively cheap one as, again, I'm not a gamer), raising my lowest WEI score to 4.5 and tried it again.

Solitaire and Pinball worked perfectly.

One thing that Windows 8 includes that isn't getting nearly enough coverage is Storage Spaces.  Storage Spaces is the improved Drive Extender that was included with Windows Home Server but dropped in the most recent update.  Storage Spaces allows you to create one large pooled drive from individual drives, with parity and redundancy.  It does what a Drobo does except it's included in the OS.

This is actually a game changer.
