"Nationals are a joke"
« Topic Start: August 01, 2008, 11:36:58 AM »
First they steal our team from our city years ago and now one of their scrubs is talking trash.

If a) this doesn't get our team fired up, b) this doesn't get the Lerners motivated to spend some serious cash this offseason and c) absolutely tick off our fans ... then we are a joke of a franchise.

Guardado sweats out practical joke
07/31/2008 8:05 PM ET
By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com

ARLINGTON -- Rangers reliever Eddie Guardado was in the steam room on Thursday afternoon. It's part of his daily routine to get his body ready for the game that night.
He knew something was up when manager Ron Washington came to get him.

"He's never in the steam room," said Guardado, who had been the subject of trade rumors all week.

"Eddie, I need to see you," Washington said, his head down.

"All right, Wash, where am I going?" Guardado asked the manager.

"Washington Nationals," Washington said with a straight face.

"Washington Nationals?" said Guardado, who is perfectly capable of reading the National League standings. "You've got to be kidding!"

"Eddie," Washington said, still keeping a straight face. "I got nothing for you. They need to see you upstairs."

Guardado, furious as can be, didn't bother changing. He was wearing shorts, a T-shirt and shower shoes when he was driven from the players' parking lot around the stadium and stormed into the front office.

"I was hot," Guardado said. "I was going to kill somebody."

He went up to the fourth floor and into a conference room where general manager Jon Daniels was meeting with his assistants.

"There's Jay Robertson, John Hart, Thad Levine, all those guys," Guardado said. "They're all sitting around and nobody is smiling. I go, 'Washington Nationals? You've got to be kidding.'"

Daniels asked Guardado to step into another room. Guardado obliged.

"Thanks for dressing up," Daniels said.

Then the general manager broke into a smile and started laughing.

"I can't hold it over you," Daniels said. "You're still a Texas Ranger."

Guardado, realizing he was the victim of a practical Trade Deadline joke, started laughing, too.

"You're lucky," he told Daniels, pointing to a pie-serving knife on a desk. "I was going to kill you."

Later, Guardado, known to pull a few practical jokes himself, was still laughing about it.

"I'm going to whip Daniels' tail," Guardado said. "Nah ... no, they got me good."

I'd tell the the Texans to go freak themselves, but I'm sure they already do to each other.

That's hilarious!

Daniels needs to learn how to maintain a straight face, though.

With that many World Series rings, we should bow before them, oh wait they've never even been to the ALCS. I hope Hamilton has a relaspe.

maybe this will shame them into playing better.

i would love for other teams to blatantly taunt our team. like when the game is 10-0, the other team's players start hitting from the other side of the plate or throwing with the other hand like in co-ed softball. or wear the helmet backwards when hitting so they cant see. or use the other end of the bat

have you been watching the nats?  opposing teams already do that kinda stuff.  i mean getting two-hit by brett myers, allowing the likes of cody ross/omar visquel/scott lilbridge to kill us every time out.  other teams aren't even trying against the nats and still embarrasing us.

It's wrong to say they stole our team. They didn't do that. Unless you're willing to say we stole Montreal's squad. Besides, the joke was funny. It's true that we freaking suck. The only way to change that is to start winning games not by whining about the fact that other teams know we suck and are having a little fun at our expense. The way to straighten that is to win.

I am a little shocked about the comments posted here regarding relapses and killings.

This makes me sad.....=(

I knew we weren't gonna be good this year, but never in my worst nightmares did I think we would be the worst team in baseball. I thought we do atleast a little better cause of the new stadium, but it seems like the first season in the new park is going to be the nats worst season yet.

This just in: press conference to be held just prior to tonight's Nats-Reds match announcing the sale of naming rights to Nationals Park, with effect from the start of next season, to Dyson vacuum cleaners...a spokesman for the Dyson company said 'We know we'll have a strong business relationship in the coming years since both of our products specialise in sucking'.

I think you just have to have a sense of humor about this story. If I were Guardado I'd be looking for someone to kill too. I just hope the front office reads the story and it hits home. Although, I'm sure it won't.

As bad as National's ownership may be, at least George Bush never owned the team.

We shouldn't be so bummed out anymore. People were complaining about us having no young middle infielders, well what do you call Emilo and Alberto. I must say Alberto showed great discipline today drawing two walk. And Emilo put a sweet swing on the ball, and drove it back up the middle to score Alberto. Then Emilo showed off his blazing speed, stealing second in (according to the broadcast) 3.05 seconds. These two recent additions and Dukes made for some show tonight. This is also bringing up my next point; Jim Bowden is the one behind the deals for Dukes, Alberto and Emilo. Although he does make some bad moves at times he is just trying to build a team which contends.

3.05 seconds is getting awfully close to Olympic track & field territory...the current 100m world record is 9.72 seconds.  It is ~30m from first to second.  Obviously, the runner will have a small leadoff, but they will also have to make a standing start (from the side, no less), instead of being able to accelerate from a crouch. Dude's FAST.
