don't they say that you can poach salmon in a dishwasher?

No crap, I saw a show about cheapskates where a woman made lasagna in the dish washer. She put all the ingredients in a pan, wrapped it tight in tin foil, and placed it in the top rack. Then she would wash her dishes and let the heat cook the  lasagna.

The first time she has to scrape fish off of her heating element shell reconsider the 75 cents a meal she's saving in gas

You haven't lived until you've cooked highway stew in foil on the engine block.

Highway stew sounds like someone Senator wide-stance would like to meet.

The Mythbusters had Alton Brown on their show and they cooked a Thanksgiving dinner in an engine compartment.

Borrowed my BiL's drill. Took 30 seconds to drill through concrete. Must be nice to have cool toys. Spent the first night in my new place #feelsgoodbro

Why would owning your first place be depressing?

Mostly because, in this area, it requires compromising something.

That's everywhere  ...  particularly if you are on a budget.

That's everywhere  ...  particularly if you are on a budget.

It's certainly worse here than in all but a handful of other markets, and NoVa is worse than DC or Maryland.

I have a really sweet life right now on the upper floors of an Arlington high-rise, sharing a 2BR apartment with a roommate. We each pay less than we would for a 1BR, the view is spectacular, the metro is nearby, and the living room is spacious.

But I'm in this area for the long haul, I'll probably get engaged soon, and I know that long-term buying makes much more financial sense. Unfortunately, that means my quality of life will decline. Further, my girlfriend and I both have different preferences about what to compromise on, so that will be frustrating to deal with.

II thought the same things when I left crystal city, and I was wrong. Less bars and restaurants and more bbqs and going to the neighborhood pool, different, but not worse

I really only bought a condo when I could get the mortgage and the condo fee for less than what the landlord wanted for my unit in Crystal Square.  i still drink at the same place, shop at the same places, etc...  Good luck, Slateman, with fixing your place.  You're more handy than I am, and you are more willing to do the stuff that'll make that place worth your while.
