my point was that if we could get melky on a 1 year deal it would be worth it.

He'll get 1 yr + incentives most likely from a team willing to take a chance on him. I could see the fish getting him.

Melky is unliked everywhere he goes. Do we really need another head case?

He could play in Mexico.  Don't they love Canseco?  They would love Melky!

MLB set to announce a "one time" exception to the rules, Cabrera is ruled ineligible for the batting title after MLB and the union reached an agreement.  Cabrera had asked to be removed from consideration for the award.

http://www.csnbayarea.com/baseball-san-francisco-giants/giants-talk/EXCLUSIVE-Melky-Cabrera-ruled-ineligible?blockID=777029&feedID=10850

Under the deal, the rule saying that a batter falling one PA shy of the batting title gets an 0-fer for that PA will not apply to suspended players.

they really ought to have a rule that if you get a 50 game suspension your stats for the season prior to your suspension are voided.  there's no way Cabrera should have been eligible for any postseason award.

It isn't an award it's a statistic

Baseball will always do what is in its best interest.  I wonder what's been going on behind the scenes here.

Blue Jays going all out.

I could have lived with that deal and not re-signing Laroche ....

so a Juice-less Melky has the same value as Kubel or Co-Co a year ago?

don't know if I buy that...hard sell. For me anyways.

Good luck convincing guys as terrible as pre-roid Melky not to juice up.  He's terrible for years, gets on the juice, does ridiculously well on the juice, gets caught and suspended, and still gets an 8 mil/year contract for 2 years.

How exactly will future terrible players be dissuaded from juicing?

blue jays are going to be good next year if they can just get another decent pitcher or two.

How do you know when Melky started juicing?

I don't.  I know he was juicing and got caught during his MVP-like season.  I know he was not a good player a couple of years ago.

So why wouldn't every player who is playing terribly take steroids.  Even if you get caught and suspended, if you play well enough, it pays off.

It's probably safe to assume that he started in 2011 in KC. Coming off of his horrid year in Atlanta, he probably felt that he needed to try something to help because KC was going to be his last guaranteed shot at the majors and if he sucked, he would be doomed to minor league deals.

He showed decent ability in 2006, 2007, and 2009

I'm not going to say that PEDs won't help, but I believe that the improvement from PEDs is far less than people think. Especially when it comes to hitting in baseball. There's also a lot of evidence that suggests that he improved his approach to the plate.

I followed the Yankees. Look at Melky's career and you can make a fair guess at when he started 'roids. Memory tells me he is a solid OF who can play CF, and will hit about .265. And I think he was platooned a bit when the Yankees had Damon and Matsui, with Gardner coming up...

My guess: started 'roids after 2010. Of course, I wanted the Nats to sign him, thinking a .260-hitting OF was better than the accumulation of Elijah Dukes and Willy Taveras and the rest.

So this is how it is? Any player that improves is obviously on PEDs? Cabrera hit better than .265 in 2006 & 2007.

The positive test helps with the whole "obviously" thing

Not any player.  One who tested positive for PEDs in 2012.  It is not a question of whether, it is a question of when with him.  Speculating about the date for Melky is very different from assuming a guy is using with no test results or other indications at all.

It's the dramatic improvement that points to a roids-time. Melky hit within a certain range, hit consistently. Then he hits .300 in 2011 and .340 in 2012.

I thought he should have an incentive based contract instead of getting 16 mil
