Luke Montz

Our organization has always slowly promoted this guy into our minor leaguue teams and I don't see why? He is a catcher with above average defence and an above average bat (for a catcher). This season, he started really strong in AA( (Avg: .382, 55AB, 21H, 5HR, 23 RBI), that is just sick for a catcher. Our solution behind the plate is maybe this guy?

Montz has never been this good before.  Maybe if he keeps it up we can trade him.

Montz always has hit good where ever he has played. He's had problems with his batting average but still, he has good power for a catcher. I don't see why we should trade him.

Bad News...

C Luke Montz, one of the top hitters in the Eastern League this season, was placed on the Disabled List on Wednesday, retroactive to May 5th. C Pat Nichols fills his spot on the Senators’ roster.

Montz, 24, is tied for first in the EL in RBI (31), tied for second in HR (7), is second in batting average (.364), and leads the league in slugging percentage (.701).

Nichols, 23, returns for his second stint with the Senators this year. He was with the club for a week in late April. Nichols was sent from Harrisburg to extended Spring Training just over a week ago.

Yea - he has a grade 2 concussion.  Took a foul ball off the face mask during live batting practice.  He could be out a week or better.  Although, lets hope not.

"He is a very underrated catcher. I don't know if the team knows anything about him," Young said. "He was calling great games down there. That's one of the things you look at from a catcher's standpoint. How do you handle a pitching staff? He did a wonderful job."

Great! Never hurts to have catching depth. I think I am feeling pretty good about our depth behind Flores in the Minor leagues (we have to cut LoDouchebag and Estrada now!)

Eh, I say trade 'em to somebody for cash considerations, or maybe a couple boxes of peanuts. As long as we get SOMETHING for the trouble.

This guy is unbelievable. He hit 11th homer of the year tonight for Harrisburg.

His numbers in AA this year: 11 HR, 8 Doubles, 44 RBI, 18 BB, 23 SO, (.353 AVG/.426 OBP) in 136 ABs.

Montz is potentially a perfect long term back up for Florez.  Leave him in AA to finish the year, release Lo Duca in the off season, and move Montz to Columbus next year with a spot on the 40 man roster.  Nieves is expendable, eventhough he may be a fan favorite.  If Montz can finish the year with a high RBI and batting average, it should be a sign that he has improved and is worthy of competing for back up time for Florez.

If this isn't in the plans, then I see no reason to hold onto him after this year.  I think we could get a really decent pitcher or IF'er for him for a team that needs a potential MLB backup catcher.

Believe it or not, Hatteberg has been pretty darn productive throughout his career.

Hatteberg was a highly productive offensive player at first base, and improved his defense enough to field his position competently.  I just mentioned him as a precedent for a catcher moving to 1st base successfully, though of course the circumstances were different.   Hatteberg's career was essentially finished as a catcher, it took Beane's vision to salvage the OBP by converting him.

I don't understand why the Nats would want to change his position.
