Minor leaguers who regressed in 2007
« Topic Start: September 12, 2007, 01:49:05 PM »
Per Kevin Goldstein, Baseball Prospectus:

After crashing out of the majors by going 7-for-54 (.130), Kory Casto’s downward slide continued with a surprisingly awful .246/.334/.384 line at Triple-A Columbus.

Almost as Disappointing: After an impressive pro debut in 2006, reliever Zech Zinicola proved to be not ready for an assignment to Double-A, putting up a 5.46 ERA in 42 games with nearly as many walks (36) as strikeouts (45). The club's 2006 third-round pick, Stephen King, lasted just 35 games in Low-A, hitting .180/.261/.258. While he rebounded a bit in the Gulf Coast League, he still amassed 105 strikeouts in 313 at-bats.

Larry Broadway had a bad year after not making the major league roster last spring.

Yeah, Broadway probably lost his shot. Sucks. He'll need another full season to redeem himself A LOT, and that's just too much for most players to overcome at that age.

I think they had already written off Larry.

Now Whitesell's the new Broadway. I hope at least one of those two gets their chance somewhere in the ML someday.

Brandon Harper (31) wasn't really a prospect but he was a decent backup for us last year at times.  He has had a god awful year in Columbus.  .185 BA .260 OBP .254 SLG in 276 ABs

Just think back to all the spring training debate about left field and how some people wanted Casto or Snelling over Church. Now two of the three are gone and we now have Wily Mo.

I don't think Kasto was ever the real deal. His numbers in AA in 2006 weren't that fantastic but he was the only thing us fans had to look forward to with such a baron farm system so I think he received more hype and promise that he should have gotten.

Now that we have so much talent in the lower levels, these pre-Lerner draft picks are fading off the radar.

I tend to agree.  In due time I am hoping a combination of our restocked farm system, the Lerner's money, and a push for contention will have even several of our current big league players pushed off the radar because we've been so raped by the MLB for so long, we have sort of settled on used goods.  Guys like Logan, Belliard, Young, Fick, Jimenez, should all be moved for youngsters or just better players, plain and simple.

Kasto never really generated that much excitement outside of Nationals fans and even some of us were scratching our heads.

When your two time minor league player of the year doesn't even rank in the TOP 100 in minor league prospects ... there is a problem.

I never liked Casto. He just gets overpowered at the big league level. He is a minor league player with limited abilities.
