wtf is this supposed to mean? :?

Overall, though, I think the Nationals did a nice job of adding some talent with some upside, though they didn’t have the money to really think big, and that must be disheartening.

sign Karns, Pena, Weaver, and Perez and I'll be happy with this draft.
Any closer to signing these?

I have no idea why they haven't signed at least Weaver? wtf?

The rest of the those 3 that I mentioned are must signs. it'd be nice to sign a few of those HS players with strong commitments to colleges too.

why haven't we signed relief pitcher Dean Weaver yet?

It's not like he is going to get taken any higher next year. He's a closer. come on Rizzo, get it done.

Maybe he doesn't want to be signed.

You can't just show up with a contract and say 'sign this'.

That's not how it works.

Since others on the thread are pretending to know budgets and what players and agents are thinking; I'll join in on the fun.

***Weaver is selected in the draft***

DEAN WEAVER: Excellent. My stock rose I was selected in the 7th round.

WEAVER's DAD: We're proud of you son!

***two weeks later***

DEAN WEAVER F*ck. F*ck. The worst team in baseball just offered me a below slot contract. I'm better than that hack Holder and he went in the third round! I'm taking my chances next year.

[Weaver crumples contract and throws it in the trash]

Although ESPN news is reporting that the Nationals will not sign Strasburg by August 17, per an inside source.........which I find hard to believe........

The Washington Nationals today agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Andrew “Dean” Weaver, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. Nationals Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Weaver posted a team-leading 10 saves (fourth in the Southeastern Conference) as a junior at Georgia in ‘09, going 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 29 relief appearances. Over his three-year collegiate career, the 21-year-old went 11-6 with 12 saves and tallied a 2.65/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (106 strikeouts/40 walks) in 122.1 innings.

With today’s signing, the Nationals have now agreed to terms with 26 players from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, including nine of their top 12 picks.

awesome.

still need to sign Miguel Pena, Roberto Perez, Nathan Karns, and hopefully one of the HS guys like 1B Corey Davis.

you don't trust me?

If they insist on such things at GMU then the least you can do is provide us with the appropriate links.  :D

So what's the Nats scorecard for signing their top 20 picks? How many of them are inked?

So, 28 of the top 35 have signed, that seems pretty good to me.  All the ones that have yet to sign are High Schoolers or college juniors.  We all know about SS.  What are the chances of getting Pena, Karns, Perez, Davis, Ridings and Strowman?

We've already released a player?

It doesn't really affect our team (at least this season), but the MLB ruled that teams have until a week before next year's draft to sign players coming out of the independent leagues (i.e. the pitcher we drafted last year, Tanner Scheppers).

Quote
MLB and the MLB Players Association reached an agreement that the deadline won’t apply to any player who is: 1) drafted after his junior year of college; 2) doesn’t sign with the team that selected him before the deadline; 3) signs a professional contact with a non-MLB-affiliated team after he has been drafted; and 4) doesn’t play college baseball again between the two drafts.

LOL. Aaron Crow will probably be 23.5 years old when he signs next year.

Wow.  This basically eviscerates the signing deadline.  Strasburg can sign with Newark or the Blue Crabs, get an endorsement deal, and dicker with the Nats right up until the draft next year.

No, he can't. Strasburg's signing deadline is August 17 because he can still return to college. Same deal as Crow last year.

Crow & Scheppers only have this option this year because they played this season in an independent league.

Could Strasburg go back to SDSU? Is Boras his official agent yet?
