GBurg, I also lost power for 6 days during the Derecho. I have a generator, though.

The flooding could cut me off completely for a couple days. Tom might have to come on a raft to save me.

Really?  My boyfriend in Gaithersburg (by Rio) had power after like 18 hours.  It seemed like Germantown had it much worse.

anybody know anything about sump pumps. like how to make sure mine works and how to turn it on. it is kind of buried in the basement floor, i hope it is one of those automatic turn on types. havent had to use it yet. hopefully it stays that way

+1

Mine turns on every so often when it rains because there's a stream under my house, but I want to test it tomorrow.

Be sure to stay positive about the Nats when you're over there. Didn't realize you guys were friends outside of WNFF.

In other words, if you live in DC, chill out.

We will probably lose power, but thats it. Unless you live on the coast or in the mountains, you'll be good.  I can tell you from years of experience that even up to 60-70 MPH is nothing, and we wouldn't even put up our shutters for that in FL.

Unless you live near one of the rivers or the creek

I got it.

Getting me a UPS for my sump pump. It's brand new and I've heard it working, so I guess that parts fine.

Here in The Land of Sublime Living™, Gaithersburg, Maryland, I'll bet I'm without power for three days. The derecho took it our for six days. No power also means no water for me (we're on a well). Sigh.

Maybe you should add a hand pump to your well setup.

Your neighborhood is pretty damn tricky.  My guess is you could be completely cutoff, unable to go right OR left out of your driveway, correct?

I know the area to your left gets several feet deep at times, but to your right can you escape?

Rio and nearby neighborhoods get power fast, my parents live a half mile from there and only lost power for a few hours last time.

Test it by putting lots of water down the drain where it is.  Like, turn on the hose.

The obvious point however, is that sumps don't work without electricity, so natural drainage is vastly superior.

I had to evacuate Ocean City last summer while on a vacation there for a tropical storm. Hope you have somewhere warm to stay :D

No idea, it hasn't been tested by rainfalls like what we could get in a worst-case scenario. Add in the downed tree risk as well...

The "left route" and the bridge will almost certainly be flooded.

He can save you in his canoe and waders!

What he really means is that he may run out of beer and have to be re-provisioned.

If it hits Chincoteague, you are talking about a tremendous storm surge into the Bay.

If the storm passes to the east / north of the Chesapeake, and I assume you are referring to the Chesapeake as opposed to Chincoteague Bay, the opposite of a storm surge will occur.  Because the storm is rotating counter-clockwise, wind will blow water south and push water OUT of the Chesapeake to a significant extent, particularly in the upper/middle Bay.  The Chesapeake could see historically LOW tides if the passing of the storm coincides with low tide.  At present, due to the moon phase there is forecast to be a lower than normal low tide at 11:23 am Monday morning in Annapolis.

Extreme low tides are really cool.  They reveal bottom features normally invisible, including sunken wrecks and natural features.  It's a chance to go exploring if you have terra firma to walk on.

Once the storm passes there would be a bit of an accordion effect as the tide, no longer blocked by the counter wind, rushes back in to fill the void, but this is nothing like a storm surge.

It seems like every new forecast has lowered the wind speeds a little and raised the rainfall.  I just finished cleaning out my gutters,  but they'll be nice and clogged with fresh pine needles in time for the storm

The genset can run the wellpump. My neighborhood sounds like a go-cart track, though. Dammit, those things are loud.

starting to get windy here in western PWC.  I stopped by 7-11 earlier for ice, they had some left but batteries were gone and they had just run out of gas.  Heading out soon to get cat food.

So the Cane itself hits about mid day tomorrow, right? I'm thinking teleworking tomorrow is the best approach.

Why don't you cover them?

Might last 10 years between cleanings if you cover them, and you don't need expensive solutions either.  Wire screen covers sold at big box retailers work great.
