Well, what if we gave him a better offer but he chose the Yankees anyway?  Of course that's his right, but it doesn't say much for competitive balance.

We did. No opt-out clause from the Yankees. He's a total ass.

I figure he didn't really need an opt-out clause w/ a team like the Yankees. He got the full no-trade clause. If he had come here, he would have wanted/gotten the opposite.

Opt out after 4 years. He could opt out and then ask for more money from the Yanks when the market inflates. He's a total ass.

The opt out is not so much about making sure he's playing for a winner, as it is a chance to become a free agent if the market moves North in the meantime.

Maybe not news or a suprise even but we had the high offer and weren't given the opportunity to raise the bid, which we would have if given the opportunity.
