3) – (Last Week – 3) - One can argue that the best pitcher in the best rotation in the big leagues has been Gio Gonzalez, not Stephen Strasburg. Gonzalez has hurled 16 shutout innings in his past two starts and is one win away from becoming the season's first 19-game winner. As expected, but earlier than expected, Strasburg has been shut down for the season.

BP:

4.  The Nationals have officially shut down Stephen Strasburg. Other things the Nationals have shut down: the vending machine in the visitor's clubhouse, the right-field grandstand's janitorial staff, and the Teddy Roosevelt. Turns out he has a strained neck from carrying around that giant head.

Nice cop out/ deflection to rank the Nats low.  Teddy's head.  Brilliant.

They've never been above 3 that I can recall, in BP's rankings.

1) – (Last Week – 3) - Manager Davey Johnson shut down Stephen Strasburg for good this season, but the Nationals still have enough firepower to compete in October.

1)   – (Last Week – 3) - The number of under-20 players who have ever hit more home runs in a season than Bryce Harper? One. Tony Conigliaro, who hit 24 in 1964. Harper's at 18 and has a legitimate shot. (Of course, Conigliaro needed only 111 games, which is amazing).

From 1 to 6 to 3 back to 1 in four weeks.  Perhaps dropping them to six was a bit of an overreaction?

Last week's rankings:

ESPN.com (9/17/2012)

2) – (Last Week – 1) - Ross Detwiler is 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts since the beginning of August, and during that stretch he has allowed only three home runs in 53 2/3 innings pitched.

SportingNews.com - (9/17/2012)

2) Nationals (Last Week - 1)

MLB.com (9/17/2012)

3) – (Last Week – 3) - Even without Stephen Strasburg, the Nats still arguably have the best starting rotation in the big leagues. It will be up to Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez, Edwin Jackson and Ross Detwiler to carry the load down the stretch as the club tries to lock down home-field advantage in the playoffs.

FoxSports.com (9/18/2012)

2) – (Last Week – 1) - The Nationals’ remaining schedule is no joke, matching up against four teams who are all jockeying for the postseason (LAD, MIL, PHI, STL). Could the weekend sweep at the hands of the Braves come back to haunt the Nats?

CBSSports.com (9/19/2012)

2)   – (Last Week – 1) - I'm not prepared to toss out the entire body of work based on a three-game sweep on the road against a damn strong playoff team in the Braves.

1) – (Last Week – 2) - The Nats clinched a postseason spot and now must figure out how to order their Strasburg-less rotation for the playoffs.

3) – (Last Week – 3) - It's hard to argue with the Nationals' shutting down of Strasburg when they've still got Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Edwin Jackson and emerging Ross Detwiler, not to mention a lineup that's getting healthier by the day.

3) – (Last Week – 2) - Gio Gonzalez became baseball’s first 20-game winner this season. He's also the first pitcher for a D.C. team to reach that mark since 1953.

1) – (Last Week – 1) - Barring a Cincinnati sweep at St. Louis, Washington will finish the season with the best road record in the majors at 48-33.

2) – (Last Week – 3) - The Nationals could wrap up the NL East title at home on Monday. Rookie of the Year candidate Bryce Harper hit his 22nd home run on Sunday, two shy of the most hit by a teenager in a single season, a record established by Tony Conigliaro, who hit 24 in 1964 for the Red Sox.

2) – (Last Week – 3) - Bryce Harper looks as good as he has all season after a big weekend in St. Louis, which could bode well for the Nationals in the playoffs.

2)   – (Last Week – 2) - Adam LaRoche, at the age of 32 and coming off a year when he needed surgery to repair a partially torn labrum and rotator cuff, has matched his career high for homers in a season (32) and is just two shy of his career high for RBI in a season (100).

CBSSports.com (10/3/2012)

1)   – (Last Week – 2) - Biggest surprise: It's tough to know where to begin in picking and choosing little individual storylines -- such as Adam LaRoche with a career high in homers -- but how about going with a broad stroke here. The fact that I'm ending the season with the Nationals as the No. 1 team is pretty damn surprising.
