Follow the Prospects: Kylin Turnbull
« Topic Start: August 17, 2011, 02:31:40 PM »
Kylin(pronounced Kigh-lin) Turnbull is originally from Oregon, and signed to play college ball at Oregon St if he didn't sign. He turns 22 on 9/12.

He graduated HS in 2008 and decided to attend Santa Barbara(CA) Community College. He was very raw, so the staff thought it best to redshirt him in 2009.

As a reliever in 2010, his line was : 1-2, 4.34era, 18.2ip, 20h, 17/11 K/BB

Scouts saw enough to like, and the White Sox selected him in the 30th round but he chose to return to Santa Barbara.

As a starter in 2011: 5-2 2.47era, 80ip, 69h, 92/17 K/BB

Baseball America ranked him #174 of available prospects for the draft.

Baseball America's scouting report before the draft:
Quote
Turnbull showed up at Santa Barbara as a raw Oregonian and redshirted in 2009. The White Sox drafted him in the 30th round last year, and he took a leap forward in 2011, going 5-2, 2.47 with 92 strikeouts and 17 walks in 80 innings and generating third- to fifth-round buzz. He faded a bit down the stretch, whether due to either fatigue or pressure. Lean and loose at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, Turnbull does a good job working downhill with his fastball and maintaining his arm slot. He typically works in the 88-91 mph range but has touched 93-94 this spring. His command was poor in his final outing during the state playoffs, and he settled into the 87-88 mph range after topping out at 91 early. He flashes an average split-finger at 80-84 mph and a fringy slider. Sometimes he'll throw it harder and it can be an out pitch that flashes plus, but other times it gets bigger and slower. Scouts are intrigued by Turnbull's fresh arm, size and stuff, but his inconsistent command is a concern. He's committed to Oregon.

BA's draft day blog:
Quote
127. Nationals: Santa Barbara (Calif.) CC LHP Kylin Turnbull. Faded down the stretch but has lean, loose frame at 6-foot-4, 195. Average fastball but has touched 93-94. Average splitter and fringy slider.

John Sickels, Minor League Ball
Quote
4) Kylin Turnbull, LHP, Santa Barbara CC: Big projectable lefty put up excellent numbers this year, velocity is average but slider and splitter have potential and his velocity could pick up further. Sleeper pick. Oregon commitment.

He actually signed with Oregon State, not Oregon.

He's only thrown 98 innings since leaving high school. For a kid that was raw coming out, that's not very much. He's come along quite a bit despite that little amount of experience, so he should only get better with more experience. Definitely some more upside there.

That's my assumption. There hasn't been much talk from the Nats or Turnbull on the Nats. But seing as he had so much success this season as a starter, it definitely seems like thats where his future lies. He'll definitely start out as a starter, because he needs innings to catch up experience wise.

He definitely has a similar build.

And let's not forget, Detwiler was a top ten pick. He has a lot of talent. We've messed with him a lot and he's been up and down, but he still has made it to the bigs. Even though he's only been mediocre, he is a big leaguer, and plenty of people make a career out of being mediocre.

It's good that the new Ross Detwiler is our fifth pick instead of our first. Progress.

Don't tell this to HalfSmokes... our front office is incompetent either way.

From the video, he looks bigger than Detwiler through the legs and seems to have a frame that could be easy to bulk up to 210.  Maybe I'm just imagining things, but he seems to whip it across his body a bit less than Det, too.  Looks like a standard 3/4 motion.  Am I wrong?

Since the last update, he's had 5 starts, gone 5 or more innings in all but one, and gave up 1 or 2 ERs in 4 of those starts.
