Reds Extend Votto?

MLB Network Radio is speculating that the Reds have signed Joey Votto to a long term extension.  If so, this could make Brandon Phillips available as a F.A. upon expiration of his contract. 

Perhaps a trade for Phillips on the horizon if the Reds have a bad first half?

Wow.  Good for Cincinnati.  Hopefully they have a number of runs with him.

To do this deal now and absorb the extra risk of guaranteeing him 2014-2023 while Votto is still two years away from being able to negotiate a deal on the open market, the Reds are essentially saying that his fair market value is somewhere around $300 million.

That's mind boggling. And people were saying we paid Zim too much.

Still, good on the Reds for being able to lock up such an immense talent. I hope it doesn't come back to bite them in the ass or be to burdensome in the later years of the contract.
