We even had a fan here named after Vinnie (Castilla)'s Mullett!   :old:

You didn't cross him though, he had a way with words that would slice through flesh so cleanly you didn't realize you'd already bled to death.

Yeah, but we did lose that guy who was the Biemel fan who had that issue keeping track of his kids.
Yeah...that was weird...

Ken Rosenthal says we discussed trading Clippard to the Rangers earlier this offseason.  Also says he's heard the Nats might be a landing spot for Lohse or Javier Vasquez.

Loshe would most definitely mean Detwiler returning to the pen. Vasquez, there may be some question as to who gets the five spot in the rotation.

One thing about Lohse is that, now that we have signed Soriano, we would lose the second rounder in addition to losing the first.  Would hurt signing draft choices in terms of the pool of money, but would hurt less than Soriano did.

I still see that as an efficiency- now that we've lost the first, each additional signing is that much less painful

I know none of you care, but I wouldn't mind seeing Lohse go to the Orioles. They need pitching. I feel like we're set. And if we were to upgrade our starting rotation, I'd only want it to be a clear upgrade over Detwiler. I feel like Detwiler vs Lohse is close (even though Lohse had an unbelievable year last year).

Do teams continue to lose draft picks as they sign additional free agents?

I care, but only because I actively root for the Orioles to be garbage.  Ha.

yes, teams continue to lose picks when they sign more than one compensation free agent.  There was talk this year of Cleveland going for muiltiple FAs because their first pick is protected.

BP on Lohse

Quote
Kyle Lohse
Value Lohse on his 2012 season and he’s worth one figure—presumably a high one. Value him on his body of work, whether three years, five years or whatever, and he’s worth something altogether different. Value him on what you think a luck-neutral reproduction of his 2012 season would be worth and you get a third number. And so right now, Lohse has nothing.

Assuming he plays in 2013, the first clue toward a regression from a career-best 2.86 ERA comes with the simple fact that it was a career-best, though after a 6.55 figure amid forearm issues in 2010, he’s had a very nice turnaround. His peripherals improved last year, turning middling walk rates into an outstanding 1.6 per 9 and frighteningly low strikeout rates into a slightly more palatable 6.1. Still, he got by with a BABIP of .262, and with a return to even league-average figures, he’s due to suffer some regression in 2013. —Zachary Levine

Does anyone think Lohse is actually an upgrade over Det in the rotation?  I know Det would only be moving to the pen, but I'd rather have him start and let the LOOGY spot be earned by Bray.  I think Lohse is a downgrade as a pitcher in the rotation only because I don't see him repeating last year.

I think they're probably even, but getting Lohse or Vazquez would be a HUGE win if we had a SP go down to injury, over the kind of 6th SP we could sign right now that wouldn't predicate his signing on being in the rotation over Detwiler.

Vazquez is not signing here unless he's the 5th starter, so you're left with whoever will agree to a long man role/minor league contract (i.e. not a very good pitcher).

While I'd feel semi-bad for Detwiler, this is a team that needs to seize it's opportunity RIGHT NOW. And that doesn't include being sentimental towards late-blooming 1st round draft picks.

You're missing a LHRP and a 6th SP. You get both if you sign another starter and move Detwiler to the pen for a year.

In other words, I'm not worried about the ~1 win difference either way between Detwiler and Lohse/Vazquez. I'm worried about the 4-5 win difference between Haren/Zimmermann and Maya/Garcia.

According to FIP/xFIP/SIERA Detwiler's due for some major regression as well.

he's outperformed his fip for most of his time in the majors

Which is only 336 innings and 56 starts. Less than two seasons worth of numbers so small sample size still applies.

I'm just playing devil's advocate though. Detwiler really seemed to make major strides last season for the better. I think he'll be good for a mid to high 3's ERA.
