Great game. When pitchers work fast, stay ahead, and throw strikes, the defense loves you. Great game. (Damn that Nieves for calling such a bad game) :)

Lannan's talent overcame it ;)

Nieves is freaking awful. Had an RBI Single, walk and called a shutout. :bang:

How about Lannan's line: 9 IP 7 H 0 R 0 ER 0 BB 1 K (106 pitches, 80 strikes)

Nyjer really should get a lot of credit, this was as much his shutout as Lannan's

One game.

For the season - cERA - Bard: 5.03, Nieves: 5.43

I thought it was probably pretty rare for a starter to only have one strikeout (or less) in a shutout, but it's happened about 400 times.

I guess a pitcher is more likely to go deep in a game inducing ground outs and fly outs on the first few pitches than throwing several pitches to get the K's

No there's no change Ray. The odds were on our side that we had to win a game sometime. Tonight was just that night.

Lannan doesn't look like a guy who pitched his first shutout. He looks tired.

He's tired from carrrying a whole team on his back

Nieves is the ideal back-up catcher. How can you not like the guy?

Why were the "odds" on our side?  What was on our side, was a superior pitching matchup.

John Lannan is a better pitcher than Dmitri Young. ;)

He's ok as a backup.  Neither one is ideal to start everyday, Bard gives you the bat which we seem to be needing lately.  Neither one is a top defensive catcher.  I do like Nieves' energy though.

Which pretty much tells the story of how bad the pitching has been.

Holy crap, I went for a bike ride in the 4th and was out for a little over an hour and the game is over in that time.  Nice job Lannan.  I get to make another game thread!

Just back from the game...fun night, hardly had time to leave my seat.

Looks like I'll leave the Guzman Jersey at home ...since the BP shirt seems to work better

Morgan was awesome - considering putting up a "New Morgantown" sign in Centerfield - any objections??

...but the Mystics lost - I always seem to attend the wrong match on these schedule-conflict days.

(United are now through to the US Open Cup Final for the second consecutive season - the final match will be 2nd September at RFK vs Seattle.)
