That's my point. How the hell can such a guy take it to 6 innings.

Pitching for the LAA I think. Not sure he is starting.

Jon "I'm generally sort of meh, but amongst this pen I look like a freakING all-STAR" Rauch.

I took my daughter to see Patterson pitch in RFK. He didn't. Hit 88mph in the first inning, didn't pitch the second. Maybe never pitched again for the Nats. Notables from that game:

- watching Al-fon-zo Sor-i-ano (as the Yankees radio guys called him, when they were pumping his rookie year) stand in left field with his arms folded as the pitcher threw.

- counting the Frank Howard seats left in the upper-deck

- hearing Alex (?) Escobar make contact as he got a couple of solid hits. Thought, OK, the Nats have found a CF.

- watching Jon Rauch blow a big lead. I think Piazza hit one off the facing below the upper deck. Not near Mike Epstein / Frank Howard territory, but it seemed to scare the wits out of the Nats pitchers.

Welch, Rauch did pitch in that game but Chief Cordero gave up the Piazza solo blast and 5 runs in the 8th and 9th

I was in the rightfield mezzanine and the sound of the HR hitting the facing was like a cannon going off

A few for me were the trade notifications.

The Chruch/Schneider for Milledge deal made me want to go postal.

Then when Nick Johnson was traded to the Marlins (then the "Florida" Marlins) for a Minor League Pitcher we have yet to see, who I think has since been traded I was ticked at the team for at least a week. Bad deal for the Last Expo.

Dumping the entire coaching staff except for St. Claire when axing Acta I think messed up any consistancey the team had at the time.

Pretty sure I was at that game. I remember thinking that Patterson was probably done.

Huh? Wasn't Acta fired and the rest of the team was retained around Riggleman?

Not sure when St. Claire was let go but to put it lightly his replacement has been pretty solid.

Is St. Claire still the pitching coach for the Marlins or did they can him too?

...so many memories of those dire early years (the '05 Overachievers the honourable exception) and the players and other personnel who made them possible...

How about the way we started off on the wrong foot on our first-ever home opener in 2005...enormous queues at the security points still in the third inning, and then running out of hot dog buns in the fourth...establishing the superb Washington Nationals tradition of Opening Day customer-service lapses that continues to the present season?

Escobar did have a ton of talent. Too bad he was made of glass.
