Peavy (3-0, 1.67 ERA) pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and left with a 2-0 lead over Arizona on Wednesday. The bullpen, however, gave up three runs the rest of the way en route to a 3-2 loss, handing San Diego (13-12) its first defeat this season in a game during which it led .

The right-hander struck out the side from the second through fourth innings to set a new team record for consecutive strikeouts and falling one shy of the major-league record set by the New York Mets ' Tom Seaver in 1970. Peavy's 16 total strikeouts matched his franchise record set May 22 against Atlanta, but San Diego lost both times.

John Patterson (0-4, 7.71) hopes to help Washington to a rare win. On Wednesday, the right-hander gave up six runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings - matching his longest outing of the season - in a 9-3 loss at Philadelphia.

Patterson, who missed most of 2006 after forearm surgery, is seeking his first win in more than a year. He allowed one run in eight innings while striking out 13 to beat Florida on April 15, 2006, but is 0-6 with a 6.26 ERA in 10 starts since then.

Just to emphasize my point, we were 1-6 vs them last yr.

Over or Under, Peavy 10 K's.

I say under.

I think you're right...over...and while I'd love to see the good Fathers get their comeuppance, I think it's dreaming to expect we'll beat Peavy.
Maybe we need some help.....

Well the bottom of the lineup is still a gaping hole, but there's really not much that can be done about that.

Also, Senators, the Rockies haven't owned us that badly.  We swept them at Coors field in '05.  They've owned us at RFK, though.  Now that I think of it...  have the Pads even played at RFK?

Yep, I went to a game last year against the Padres at RFK.  We definitely lost that game and the series.  I hope Khalil and Adrian Gonzalez who have been known to haunt us take it easy on us this week.  The Pads should be tired tonight though since they played 17 innings yesterday.

Remember they completed the almost-unprecedented 8-game (4 at RFK, 4 at Coors) non-divisional sweep last year.

I think we'll see yet another pitcher's duel. I predict that the Padres win 3-1.  Peavy 7 IP 9 K 3 H 3 BB 1 ER
JP 6 IP 4 K 5 H 2 BB 2 ER

And the Padres have played at RFK in both of the last two years, they swept us in '05 and if my mind serves me right they won at least two of the three at RFK last year. Chief blew a lead in the 9th in the last game before the All-Star break.

ugh, Paul Schreiber, he's the umpire who screwed us in that walk-off balk game in Milwaukee a few years ago.
