Burgess promoted to Vermont
« Topic Start: August 21, 2007, 07:00:12 PM »
After posting great numbers in the GCL (.336 AVG 8 HR 32 RBIs 25 BBs in 128 ABs), 18 year old Michael Burgess has been promoted to Vermont.  In his first game in Vermont today he is 2/2 with a Run and an RBI.

Season ends pretty soon - this is a pat on the back promotion, I guess

Great to see, they have a lot of promising players there... Seuss, Rhinehart, Bass along with the the 4 all-star pitchers.  it would be nice if most of them made the move down here to Potomac next season.

Michael Burgess, OF, Short-Season Vermont (Nationals)

Burgess entered the spring as one of, if not the best high school bats around, but he struggled during the season, and scouts were worried about his ability to hit the breaking ball, as well as some makeup question that revolve more around the legacy of his high school, which has produced talented troublemakers like Elijah Dukes, Carl Everett, and Dwight Gooden. As a result, the Nationals were able to nab him with the 49th overall pick, and it’s looking like a steal so far. After hitting .336/.442/.617 in the Gulf Coast League, Burgess had little trouble adjusting to the much more advanced New York-Penn League, batting .286/.383/.457 in 19 games. Always a walking machine in high school, teams wondered if it was just opponents pitching around him, but he’s shown a keen eye as a pro, drawing 35 walks in 198 at-bats to go along with some of the best pure power in the draft. The Nationals’ minor league system has taken a huge step forward in the last nine months, and Burgess is another reason for it.

Per Baseball America:

"Burgess entered the year as one of the top high school position prospects in the draft, but clubs debated his worth because of his inconsistent performance in the spring--not to mention the legacy of his alma mater at Tampa 's Hillsborough High, which produced talented yet troubled big leaguers Elijah Dukes, Carl Everett, Dwight Gooden and Gary Sheffield and Carl Everett. But Burgess, put it all together in his pro debut, leading the GCL in on-base percentage (.442) and slugging (.617).

Burgess' bat speed, strength and leverage produce huge raw power, and he has enough maturity to keep his hands back to square up quality breaking balls. Burgess shows advanced plate discipline and pitch recognition, and his long arms allow him to cover any part of the strike zone.

Though he didn't look as athletic as he did as an amateur, Burgess still displayed plus arm strength in right field. He's a slightly below-average runner and projects as a right fielder with classic tools.

"He doesn't run real well, but when you hit it as far as he does it doesn't matter," said one scout from a National League club. "He was very aggressive in all phases of the game. He had something to prove. Pitchers really went after him and challenged him, and he just ate that up." "

Per Svrluga:

Burgess was promoted to short-season Class A Vermont at the end of the year. The Nationals got him with the 49th pick, but GM Jim Bowden believes he was a top 15 talent. There's no way he would have slipped that far if he had produced a solid senior season. His misfortune may very well have been the Nationals' fortune.

Seems pretty unfair to judge him by the high school he went to, instead of his personal character. That's awful. I'm glad we gave him an opportunity and I'm even happier he used that opportunity to its fullest.

well it is just par for the course, really.  he went to same high school as all those HORRIBLE degenerate excuses for humanity, so he obviously must be one by default as well.  that's how people tend to think.  and the next time he gets a speeding ticket, all the sportswriters and message board posters will be out in force saying "I TOLD YOU SO!".

it's not right, but that's the way it is.

New addition: OF Michael Burgess -- one of the Nationals' two supplemental picks (along with LHP Josh Smoker) in this year's draft was named the top prospect in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League by Baseball America.

Added to Chris Marrero as one of the top prospect in all of the minor leagues...  8)
