Ok my next install will be Ubuntu. It's just that everything I know about command line system administration is all RedHat based, and Debian is completely different.

I was introduced to Linux by my Computer Science professor long ago and he was a Red Hat fan, this was back in the days of Red Hat 7. I've been mostly on the Ubuntu train since 4.10

I think I used slackware a little less than 15 years ago. It was before Gnome or KDE.

Evolution sucks. I absolutely hate it. if I ever see the guy who thought it was a good idea to make it so that removing it made your install unusable, I am going to kick him in his nuts.

when is the Lubuntu Beta coming out?

needless to say, I am going back to 9.10. not by choice, but because removing evolution has rendered my ubuntu installs useless.

doing a fresh install now.

when Lubuntu goes into beta, I am switching. and I will just install the packages as needed.

freak evolution, and freak the people who think it is absolutely critical for a home user with no cares about microsoft exchange to have it.

A lot of the parts of the evolution packages are used in other things, which breaks stuff when you try to remove it. Kind of like trying to remove explorer on Windows.

my experience with it has been...every time I reboot my computer I have to boot into the command line and sudo apt-get install evolution before ubuntu works.

I have done it three times today (reinstalling evolution). twice with 9.10 and once with 10.04.

I only deleted it once.

Try installing "ubuntu-desktop" that should replace everything that has been accidentally deleted.

I think the Lubuntu beta is available, but the whole thing looks shaky as hell at the moment. Their site sucks, I can't find a damn thing.

that's one of the things that was missing from Alpha 3 when I tried it.

nah, Lubuntu comes with Aqualung as the default music player. at least it did in alpha 3.

I hate how often I accidentally click on that crap. It's a huge resource hog and it's complete doodoo.

I can't get the Lucid beta to boot on my machine, unfortunately. I can run it fine in a VM but it hangs when trying to boot off of the live cd directly. I had no problem with the Alpha though, so it's strange.

the Music store is decent. easy to get to, relatively easy to navigate, a bit sparse right now since it is just a beta.

sparse in both features and selection.

60 second song previews, .77 cents per song. the Ubuntu people partnered with 7digital for the store. the store is integrated into Rhythmbox with a webkit-based plugin. supposedly the store plug in should be able to be used in other music players as well.

all songs are in drm-free MP3 format. when you buy a song, it is downloaded to your Ubuntu One storage by default (this setting can be changed, of course).

I have not actually purchased anything yet, but will eventually. when I get a mp3 player. i don't know which media players will or won't play nice with this thing, so don't ask me.

anyhow, here is a screenshot.

(NOTE: the song playing in my rhythmbox is NOT from the store. I was streaming Last.fm when i took the screenshot)

7digital.com the old fashioned way works fine for me, except when they link the wrong song and you get something random instead of the song you bought.

There are also better versions of winmo (ie "cooked roms") out there.
