Oh snap!

...but how much would I have to pay if I have 122 GB of music?

Pretty sure this is running off of the same cloud as the RackSpace/JungleDisk backup.  If so, get ready for lags.

I haven't see any lag yet.

H-nat, there's tiered plans for more gigs, up to a TB

It's $1 per GB per year extra available in the sizes 20GB, 50GB, 100GB, 200GB, 500GB, 1000GB.  So upgrading to the 20GB plan is $20 per year, 50GB plan is $50 per year, etc.

The first album I uploaded was Metallica as a  to Lars Ulrich.
I realized how puny 5GB is compared to my collection :bang:

So you actually have to upload?  It's not like Lala where it matches the songs you have and allows you access?  That's kind of crappy.

Also, I thought that if you purchase an album, you get a free upgrade to 20GB.

I haven't bought anything. I'm not sure about matching, it did say "comparing your tracks to the Amazon catalog" - but remember, no one sells mp3s of Metallica except iTunes, I believe.

That's fine, I have no intention of buying mp3's of Metallica

My mp3's were ripped from a CD I own, the old fashioned way

The 20GB upgrade lasts 1 year, hopefully it's extended after every album purchase.

I've got an unlimited cloud account with Jungledisk, too bad it doesn't do streaming.

What's the loss in fidelity in the process?  I've heard mp3's are terribly compressed compared to CD's, which themselves were cutting corners from analog recordings.

You can always do lossless encoding from a CD if you're a purist, but the storage requirements are much greater, though anymore that's not much of an issue on computers...  still something of an issue on portable players, but not as much as the fact that a lot of portable players don't support any lossless codecs (or only support their own kind, ahem ipodphone)

mp3 is kind of out of date anymore.  AAC is a much better choice, though it's still lossy.  I think the common wisdom is that 128-160kbps AAC is comparable in quality to 320kbps mp3 (which as far as I know is the highest officially specced rate you can use with mp3)

Just use this:

Then you're MP3's will have all the pops and sounds of your :old: vinyl :old:

Pretty sure Apple is about to launch a similar service.

Yeah, they got beat to the punch, though. If everyone's already set up with Amazon, they won't care. Also, Amazon's got an Android app.

let the lawsuits begin!  Michael Robertson's company is already under a barrage of lawsuits from record labels claiming that cloud-based services are effectively a form of piracy.

Good article here:

iTunes users will wait for Apple unless Apple takes flipping forever. iTunes users make up the vast majority of the US digital market.
