That show is great.  I really liked this episode on the white sturgeon:

http://animal.discovery.com/fish/river-monsters/white-sturgeon/

There are a few shortnose sturgeon in the Potomac, but they're exceptionally rare.  If there are any atlantic sturgeon left (get up to 12' long) they are most likely laying deep in the vicinity of Fletcher's Boat House.

There are atlantic sturgeon known to be in the James River, so beware newbie catfishermen.....

 :'(

There aren't any aside from Orvis in the DC area.  Oh, LL Bean has a shop inside too.

Angler's Lie was the place to go, but it closed in 2007 or so.  Urban Angler opened an Arlington shop, but I see on the web site they are moving.  http://www.urbanangler.com/

There's always Harry Murray's joint in Edinburg Va, but it's quite a drive.  Best to combine it with a trout or smallmouth prospecting trip.

I'll have to check out Murray's next time I cruise down to my parent's house.  That's one thing I miss about living in SW Virginia - plenty of cool fishing shops.

Snappy bow tie you're wearing. Is that your son you're holding?

Thanks.  No, just some kid we gave a nickel to to let us use him for sturgeon bait.

Gar are really cool.  We see a lot of them in the Pocomoke and James Rivers, particularly the Chicahominy, which is a trib of the James.  Loaded with gar.

They stocked "sterile" Tiger Muskies some years ago, now they find true muskellunge.  I'm not sure they ever figured out how that happened.

headed up to North East PA this weekend for a two-day shot at trophy smallmouth bass on Lake Erie.  The task is complicated by a bar / restaurant just across the street from our hotel in Ripley NY.  Seasickness is a genuine risk, Erie is big water.

The town of North East is just on the Pa side of the state line, with Ripley on the NY side, only a few miles apart.  We stay in NY, fish in PA.

Don't let the bell ring twenty nine times...though I guess that was Lake Superior

8 of us going up, so maybe 8 rings?

It's big water, very scary.  We have about a 3 mile run from the fishing area back to the shelter of the marina, and sometimes we're clinging to the gunwales invoking deities.

World record snakehead caught in Potomac, but eaten before being properly certified.

Juan Duran has quite the “Frankenfish” tale to tell, and it begins with a Kinky Beaver lure and a giant northern snakehead out on the Occoquan River in Virginia.

It ends — well, who knows where, as things have become murky for the man who caught the enormous snakehead on the water by Woodbridge.

Holy crap. Not that I've been inclined to dip a toe in the potomac, but now it looks like I'm not going anywhere near the tributaries either!

Dude, Thai and Vietnamese people go ape$hit over them...the markets are full of the damned things flopping around in big plastic tubs.  They look nasty to me though.

People eat those?

they are supposed to be really delicious. One could even make a case that the "accidental" release wasn't accidental at all. Given their hunting practices, they are probably a very clean tasting fish.

I'm more afraid of it eating me than it should be of me eating it.

Read that online this morning.   That thing scares the hell out of me.   It's a damn air breather too.

Wait, you're a Vietnam vet, right? You've probably eaten these things without knowing it. ;)

I was "era".    I did 11B and got lucky.   You wouldn't believe me if I told you what I did.    My wife might eat that crap though (half Japanese).
