Every time I see this thread pop up, I get a mental image of Chris Marrero being shot out of a trebuchet.

He is still hitting well. I'm just trying to figure out where all his power went...

who's to say it's gone?

he's not exactly in a great line-up (although now lombardozzi will help upgrade it) and he still has 8 homers and 14 doubles.  he could very well finish the year with 20-25 homers.  and at age 22 how much are you expecting?

i've just listed reasons why nobody should hit the panic button.

he's not in a great line-up, he's still young, he's not expected to be a 40 HR hitter (his max has been 23 ... i think most scouts are projecting 25-30).  what else do you want?

haha i'm aware, but i need him to go into detail.  i don't know how you can expect more when he's not supposed to be a 40 HR hitter.

8 homers puts him on pace for about 18

so far he's shown he can hit 18-23 homers a year in the minors.

18-23 homers really aren't enough. He's never cleared 30 doubles, so if he's stuck around 20 home runs that's a recipe for a .150 ISO, which isn't enough for a major league first baseman.

I mean, I really could care less if he turns into a weaker fielding Casey Kotchman (a 10-year major league career as a second division starter is nothing to sneeze at) but that's not a player any club with hopes of contention should count on as a long-term solution at first base.

again i've heard scouts project 25-30 power.  23 was his closest.

i put some stock into the fact he hasn't had much protection around him in AAA.

Quote
Chris Marrero (Nationals)
TCF: Once a top-tier prospect at the position, Marrero has lost his shine in recent years, looking more like a platoon bat than a major-league regular. Marrero can still flash plus power potential, but his offensive contribution this season is centralized in his home park (.387/.447/.613), while reports of his shaky performance on the road are confirmed by the numbers: (.207/.268/.300).

It'd be cool to call him up and let him DH in some of these interleague games.  8)

I highly, highly doubt Marrero is in the top-10 prospect list come 2012...

Exactly the point I'm making now. Others seem to agree that Marrero has lost the top propsect appeal.

Losing top prospect appeal doesn't mean he doesn't mean he's not a potential big leaguer.

Nobody is expecting stardom from him. But he has the potential to be a solid big leaguer. Dude's only 22. Still got plenty of time to continue to improve his skills, and he's already been solid.

That spoke more about the quality of our system, than it did about Marrero. He was a pretty high 1st, so there were some decent expectation, but wasn't ever considered an elite talent.
