The operative words being "GUARANTEED", "potential" and "opportunity". He definitely has the projected tools and will be given the chance to prove himself. That does not mean he is GUARANTEED a roster spot. It means that he will compete for a starting job. If he can't secure a starting position he COULD still theoretically make the team and get plenty of AB's but nothing in that quote GUARANTEES him a roster spot.

Yeah, I think we all read this comment from Bowden previously. But until now, I never realized it would be interpreted as a saying it is was a guarantee.

Bacsik and Dukes will aswell
Dukes wins a job in camp and so does Bacsik
Both take the chance and run with it
Bacsik 15 wins middle 3 ERA best on staff
Dukes 32 HR, 88 RBIs, .278 AVG

So go on record, what kind of numbers do you expect him to put up in '08?

i'm not going to do do my '08 statistical forecast for dukes JUST YET, i'll wait until the conclusion of spring training when the position battles are sorted out and the starting outfielders are set.

however, i will take ANYONE up on your suggested wager on dukes stat line, using pecota's projection.

Quote
335 plate appearances:  .272 / .358 / .473  13 homers, 45 RBI's, 8 sb's

i'll gladly put my wnff membership on the line. anyone wanna try me? i suggest whoever does gets a back-up user name ready.

o ya, i'm obviously taking the over on all of those stats.  ;)

and here's a non-statistical prediction to kick things off: dukes will win a starting job outright over pena or milledge in spring training and proceed to be a bona fide beast all yr and be the feel good story of the season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bergmann had a breakout season either. He has the stuff to do it when he's on.
