Do we know it was cortisone? One report I read (Davey's quotation) said novacaine.

Maybe both? Injections into the shoulder capsule hurt like hell.

I give him credit for trying to tough it out, but this seems like a bad idea, pain killers just mask the pain- hopefully he's not destroying the shoulder

It's Ryan Mother freaking Zimmerman.

You put him in the lineup every day until his arm falls off or he asks to go on the DL.

I don't care if he hit .200, you keep him in the middle of the lineup all season. I will never trust a player more than I do Ryan Zimmerman with the bat in his hands in a big situation.

He's due. He'll tell the Nationals when it's time for him to take some time off, not vice versa. If any med staff tries to pressure him, then fire them.

2 hits today, keep the faith.

Glad he got two hits. What about 3 years from now when he's missing more time and even more ineffective due to complications and relapses from this injury?

No more planning ahead for the future, huh. Future is now, may as well just sell it out and get the bat we need.

I'm pretty sure I read he can't hurt it anymore if he plays, it's the discomfort that's causing the problems at the plate. But it's my understanding that continuous use of cortisone could be problematic.

I find it odd that this is the course of action they would take with Zimmerman when they're planning on shutting down Strasburg after 170-ish innings.

They do have more money invested in Zimmerman, after all.

This is a terrible, terrible idea. Dude is going to end up with kidney failure with this plan and still smoke anii at the plate.  Cut him open now and get it over with.

The Kilgore article made it sound like worst case scenario would be offseason surgery to remove bone chips that might build up. If so then he should have plenty of time to rehabilitate the injury before ST next season.

I'm skeptical but hopeful.

Cortisone injections have been linked to injury problems in the long term. Getting them regularly is a BAD idea. It's one thing to do it for one game, in the playoffs or something. But to actually plan to get them every couple of weeks for half a season is dumb beyond reason.

Beyond the prolonging the injury issue Slate mentioned this plan of action is going to destroy his kidneys they do this the whole season. I hope he enjoys kidney stones.

Maybe the idea is 1 cortisone shot a month for the next 3 months then surgery in the off season if necessary? Something like that?  He's had 3 shots since April so far, right?

That wouldn't be nearly as bad I would think

Ugh ... I don't like the way any of this sounds

Wait, he's already been taking it? Has he not noticed that they aren't helping?

Seriously? This is what the training staff and management office thinks is the best plan for a guy we're invested in for the next 10 years?!?

Holy freaking crap. The stupid at Nationals Park is so strong, I'm pretty sure you can see it glow for miles.

I'm with Slateman on this.  This is dumb as rocks.

I remember Mike Lowell saying that 3 shots a season are the limit without doing damage.  I hope RZ keeps his mobility better than Mike Lowell.  I thought Kilgore covered Lowell.  he should know better.

Let him rest. Lombo to 3B, and the Nats donlt need DeRodsa or Nady. Corey Brown is hitting .295 with 16 HR. Moore + Brown + Harper + Ankiel + Bernadina gives the Nats some flexibility in the OF, and at 1B.

Close

DFA Nady
Zimmerman to the DL
Call up Corey Brown
Lombo/DeRosa platoon at third
Play Tyler Moore in LF
Get Brown some playing time either in CF or RF.

Actually, I think you brought that up. I am more concerned about future relapses and issues with this shoulder. He's already talking about surgery. This does not bode well for a guy who is supposed to be the cornerstone of this team for years.

Maybe we don't need to convert Rendon to second or left field. Maybe him and Zimmerman can just alternate. When one cames off the DL, the other takes his place. By the time the new guy gets hurt, the other one should be coming off the DL

Congrats to Ryan Zimmerman who will be presented with the Lou Gehrig memorial Award on Friday July 6th vs. the Rockies well deserved!!

Congrats to Zimmm (for winning an award that certainly has nothing to do with consecutive games played).
