 Collin Balester update.

2-1/3 innings with the Pirates so far this spring. 0 runs, 0 hits, 3 k's and 1 BB. Throwing 91-94 MPH with 1 save. He has a ton of command now with a killer change up to go with his wicked curve ball;. He could start in AAA but is likely to make it back into the Bigs this year. Good for him!

K'd Yankees Pedroia last Friday and got Red Sox, Victorino to ground out yesterday in his only batter he faced.

The last two spots in Pittsburgh's pen are up in the air. Presumably, whoever is the loser of the Locke/Worley competition for the fifth starter job will be sent to the pen as the long reliever, leading to the last two spots being up for grabs among Radhames Liz, Stolmy Pimentel, Balester, and about three other guys. I'm guessing Bally still has options, in which case, he probably gets sent to AAA despite Pimentel's struggles last season because Pimentel is out of options. Bally probably is the superior pitcher to Pimentel though.

Collin has no options left so he will have to keep putting up zeros! He is a totally different pitcher than when he was with the Nats. Command is everything and he has figured it out.
Thanks to everyone for your good wishes.

In that case, its between him and Pimentel straight up for the last spot. I wish him the best of luck. Pittsburgh obviously thinks he has something since they brought him back for a second season.

it looks like on the Pirates site that he's a non-roster invite and not on the 40 man.  Maybe he has an opt out if he does not make the 25 man roster, but otherwise I think he can start in the minors.

Correct. Probably AAA but if he keeps putting up zeros, you never know. Thanks.

Ryan Tatusko, a.k.a. the half of the Tanner Roark trade that didn't become a surprise ace, has retired. He's in my area and occasionally hangs out at the baseball field at the college where I work.

Flipping awesome!  Eat some innings with a 4.5 ERA, big guy!

He turned into Walters who turned into Asdrubel, right?

Alex Meyer is looking like a future closer, not a starter.

Meyer sent to minor league camp.

7 walks in 5.2 IP. Everyone can keep hoping those long limbs eventually find a repeatable motion.

the Span trade is looking like another steal.  I'm happy to have been wrong in thinking we would regret that deal.

Joe Beimel released by Texas after giving up a whopping fourteen runs in three innings.

I'm sure Beimel will get a minor league deal with someone. He did well enough last year that teams will take a chance that his spring training performance was a fluke.

I think we need a 2015 version of this thread.

Tyler Clippard is having an awful spring, 6.35 ERA in 6 appearances. 5.2 IP, 9 hits allowed, 3BB, 6K, opponents batting .346 against him.

Sigh. Clippard could have a 50 ERA and no one would care because it's spring training.
