he was always a gamble, that's why he fell to us, but if the Lerners were willing to shell out for the last draft class they could, it wasn't a bad bet, hopefully between him and rendon (possibly the best pitcher and hitter in the draft if healthy) one can stay healthy

2011 will be the Nationals gamble year. Rending, Purke, and Goodwin. All big gambles.

Why Goodwin? I'm much more worried that Meyer will have problems repeating his delivery than I am Goodwin coming around and being a solid regular.

Goodwin has a lot more athletic ability than development as a baseball player. Young, athletic. Very much like Destin Hood.

I think Meyer will end up being the safest pick. I also think they drafted him to be the closer after Storen.

Goodwin is nothing like Hood. Being a good athlete doesn't mean their background was similar. Goodwin has always been a baseball player. Hood was a legitimate football guy. I don't necessarily want to say Goodwin was polished, but he definitely was much further down the developmental path than Hood. The gamble with Goodwin was based on some questions about him leaving UNC and sign ability, based on him being just a sophomore and potential top 10 pick the following year.

As for Purke, definitely disappointing. We don't want to see any setbacks at all. But, we do know the Nats are being very cautious with him. Every pitcher has good and bad days with the arm. If there was any tightness or soreness, you know they're going to take it slow and shut him down. Hopefully we get some encouraging news soon about the situation.

Hood came from HS and was more of a football player.  He's obviously behind Goodwin b/c the fact Goodwin played college ball, but I think both Hood and Goodwin will be fine.

I probably should have checked the Goodwin thread first  ;), but does anyone have any more news on Purke?  I assume he's still on the DL.  Is he doing any rehab?

Says just tendonitis. But that was almost a month ago. Any update since then?

Also a nice piece on Giolito

Might be that all of Rizzo's injury prone draft picks aren't the steals they were hyped up to be.  Jimbo got fired for paying Smiley $1.4 million and this kid got over $4 mil.

JimBo got fired for bonus skimming. Don't get it twisted.

Not true, Bowden got fired because the media ran him out of town.

I'd like to think Bowden got fired because he didn't do his research and turned the franchise into an even bigger laughing stock.

Please. Bowden dug his own grave. He was knee deep in the prospect skimming scandal. He was a blowhard and a jackass. He was unprofessional. Teams refused to deal with him.

Rizzo is a much better GM.

I'm thinking the lefty in the sling was Smoker.

Purke is apparently in Florida, ironing out new mechanics.

Quote
- Matt Purke is working out with the Nationals Gulf Coast summer league team, trying to build strength in his shoulder while also tweaking his delivery to a more consistent and fluid motion. The team is not thinking about surgery but certainly there are still concerns with Matt's progress, expect to see the Nationals slow play his development from here on out.

That's a shame. Shoulder surgery is never good but well have to wait for details to know how bad it is.

Good news is, he's still left handed, and while he has some heat when healthy, he isn't a guy that lived off a 98mph fastball.

Not noted. It's on the same shoulder he had tendonitis in

Amanda Comak has an update:

Quote
After a season plagued by pain and far less pitching than he'd expected, Washington Nationals top prospect Matt Purke is recovering from surgery on his left shoulder to relieve his bursitis and clean out scar tissue. The left-hander, whose labrum and rotator cuff are in "excellent" condition, is expected to be ready and fully healthy for spring training.
