i do think it is a bit risky changing coaches at this point in time. this could just be a rough patch. its still pretty early. but if they made a change i'd understand

They've lost 10 of the last 15. Get completely embarrassed by TB last playoffs. Other than the 7-0 start and the Rangers series, they've looked like complete crap for most of the last 12 months.

yeah. didnt even really consider hunter hasnt coached in the AHL yet. i dont think you can jump from juniors to the NHL.
I'd feel comfortable with Hartley. He has won a cup and and coached superstars Sakic and Forsberg, also Rob Blake and Ray Bourque.

His wiki page says he is currenly coaching in sweden. wonder if that complicates things. fyi, he was fired from the thrashers after going 0-6. thats a quick trigger

I would guess that he has an out clause in his contract in case the opportunity arises for him to coach in the NHL again.  As far as the Thrashers go, didn't he take them to their only playoff appearance in the season before he was fired? Wonder how that coaching change worked out for them?

Slava says that there needs to be a coaching change but also that Alex needs to take the C and give it to Knuble and vow to work hard enough to earn it back. Damn if that isn't spot on.

I don't particularly want a coach who's won a cup. I don't know if this is true in the NHL, but in the NFL the coaches that win Super Bowls then go somewhere else based off those credentials usually do not win super bowls (Shanahan, to name one, has disappointed; I can' think of a coac off the top of my head who's won a super bowl with one team and then with a different team).. I don't know who the Caps should get, but I really hope they don't get someone because he's won a Stanley Cup. When you do that, the argument for respect becomes "Oh, he won a Stanley Cup." But if you have to argue about respect, it's not really respect. That's the way it is for Boudreau right now.

good point. looks like scotty bowman is the only guy to win with more than one team. looks like he did it with 4 teams

I'd be down with Hartley.  Pat Quinn and Craig Mactavish would also be a big upgrade.  Quinn knows all about mercurial Russians.

Someone on the Bumperboards mentioned Mactavish earlier today. I had not thought about him, but he's an interesting name to throw around to.

Marc Crawford also comes to mind.  Lots of good coaches out there.

Other than Scottie Bowman and Pat Quinn (whom I'm really familiar with) what at are the pros and cons of the other names being thrown out here. Educate those of us not as familar with some of these names. Thanks!

In addition to Frau's suggestion, I'm getting a real sense that the puck heads don't think BB is long for the Caps.    I've felt that way as a casual fan but last night's game was awful.

I'm not that crazy about Crawford. His last five years of coaching in the NHL were not that great. He does have a Stanley Cup, but I would rather have Hartley.

Who are they and where did they coach?

Marc Crawford: Coached Colorado to a Stanley Cup title in '96. Had some great years with Colorado and then Vancouver. The Canucks didn't make the playoffs in his last season. He coached LA and Dallas after that, with no playoff appearances.

Bob Hartley: Also coached Colorado to a Stanley Cup title (2001). Coached Altlanta from 2002 to 2008. Took Atlanta to their only playoff appearance in 2007. Fired by the Thrashers in 2008 after 0-6 start. Currently coaching in Sweden.

Craig Mactavish: Coached the Edmonton Oilers from 2000 to 2009. Led them to the Stanley Cup finals in 2006, where they lost to Carolina. Missed the playoffs five times during his time at Edmonton. Currently coaching in the AHL.

Kirk Muller: Relatively inexperienced at coaching. Currently coaching in the AHL. Was assistant coach with Montreal Canadians for a couple of years. Considered to be an up and comer in coaching. He is supposed to be a good x's and o's guy.

I'm not sure about Muller, but I believe the other three guys would be a big change from the way BB runs the team. They would not be considered player's coaches.

IIRC Mactavish was the last helmetless player in the NHL.

Dale Hunter would 'definitely' consider being the Capitals head coach if they were to offer it to him. Leonsis / McPhee better jump on that right now.

easy and cheap depending on the opponent, just have to go through stubhub or CL. tuesday vs STL will be one of the cheapest games out there. Thursday cs the pens will be the most expensive

I can guarantee if he took over, the Capitals would no longer be a soft team, they'd be hitting everyone in their path.

Okay, I don't get this. I know his history as a player, but what's his history as a coach? We need someone with the right style.

Discuss.

He's actually a pretty good coach from what I remember reading / hearing about him. He coaches some team in Canada, think a minor league team, they're pretty impressive. Can't think of their name right now.

Chris Simon might be a hell of a coach someday.
