Mining ore and smithing your own gear is very satisfying.

I doubt the same is true outside of the game

Really?  I'm totally not a RPG guy but all of this talk about it has me salivating waiting for Chunkmas to happen so I can finally play this beast.

Not sure I've played an RPG since Baldur's Gate, other than playing at Oblivion a bit.

I tried to play Mass Effect and other supposedly amazing RPGs and couldn't get into them. I love me some Skyrim.

How far into Mass Effect did you play?  The first one starts off a bit slow and the interface definitely takes some getting used to.  I played up until the Citadel on my first attempt, and like you just couldn't get into it.  But I went back a few months later and started fresh, and just got sucked in.

On a sidenote, Mass Effect isn't "really" an RPG, especially not the second one (and presumably 3 will follow the same system).  I forget what the term commonly applied to the franchise is, but it has "RPG elements."  I tend to think of it as sort of a first-person choose-your-own-adventure shooter.

Well, over the shoulder third person...  it still plays more or less like an FPS.

I might have to play the first one again. I just could not get into it and didn't see what all the hype was about. I still have it lying around somewhere.

By the way, @ Obed:

If you're really interested in getting into more TES back story, I think Morrowind is probably a better retro choice than Oblivion.  Oblivion was certainly a good game in its own right, and I spent more hours on it than I'd care to share, but Skyrim is in many ways a more refined Oblivion.  Euro-centric setting, lots of standard medieval/RPG stereotypes, similar underlying systems, etc.  Morrowind is a very different game.  An alien and different environment, and yet still very much in keeping with TES lore.  It gives a much stronger sense of being a stranger in a strange land, whereas Oblivion is pretty generic and reptitive.

The knock on Morrowind is obviously the graphics are fairly dated (though they were quite spectacular for 2002) and the fact that combat works on a "die roll" system where hitting something doesn't mean you actually hit it.

Here's a decent list comparing Morrowind and Oblivion - works well enough since Oblivion and Skyrim are more similar than they are different:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players

There's no reason not to give Oblivion a shot if you're interested, especially if they're doing the crazy 6 or 8 dollar GOTY + expansion + DLC sales on Steam, but generally speaking I think Morrowind makes for a better "getting to know the history of the franchise" game.

Though in fairness the expansion for Oblivion (Shivering Isles) definitely reintroduces some of the alien/strangeness that Morrowind did so well.  I'm very hopeful that we'll get some DLC that brings that kind of flavor to Skyrim.

There seem to be a lot of mods for Morrowind that really enhance the graphics too, so they might not be that dated so as the make it unbearable.

Yeah, though having tried that stuff out a few months before Skyrim came out, I can tell you that the game definitely still looks very dated.  And that's when I was comparing it to Oblivion.

Still, if you're the kind of gamer that can see past graphics and appreciate a game on its merits, Morrowind is definitely worth a look.

I'll have to give it another shot with the recommended mods.  I don't think I installed all of them when I tried it.

More than likely he'll play it for 15 minutes, get annoyed that there's no immediate blowing up of crap/stealing cars/tanks, and it'll collect dust until I finish Uncharted 3 and play it.

I tried Oblivion and couldn't get into it for whatever reason, but I am excited for Skyrim. While I know they're not the same as the Fallout series (which I love), Bethesda knows how to make quality RPGs.

Pretty similar to fallout from what I understand, but with swords and spells instead of guns and in a fantasy world instead of a post-apocalyptic world.  I never got into Oblivion either, but I'm liking Skyrim so far.

The dudes I bit as a vampire are alive and well, and they aren't vampires. That's dumb. They should either be tranformed in to vampires or dead.

Why?  In most vampire lit, feeding and killing aren't necessarily intertwined, nor are feeding and turning.

Final room in this dungeon must've had at least 20 draugr.  Talk about brawls.

Thanks for the tips Chief. Unforunately I seem to have missed the sale.  :?

Is that Forsaken cave? Honestly the snowy sabre cats gave me more problems than the mass of Draugr as the layout was more forgiving. Granted, at level 20, I had ten or so.

Nah, Dustman's Cairn, it's a "Companions" (aka Fighters Guild) quest

3 Frost Trolls after I activate Berserker Rage?  No problem.

How do multiple files work? Are the saves for the different files kept seperate or are they kept together, thus risking potentially accidentally saving over my first file?

Tell me your Steam ID and you can curse at me too ;)

What do you mean?  There are three autosave files and one quicksave file.  If you actually go into the menu and do a "real" save, those files are all unique and won't be saved over unless you deliberately choose to do so later on.  Quicksave always overwrites itself, and the three autosaves overwrite themselves in chronological/LRU order.
