I think the reporter was just trying to make a tongue and cheek joke with that question. Fairly harmless but he should have made it more clear that he was making a joke.
The fact that Bryce referred to his age and it being "illegal in the States" made me feel that he ignored any religious implications. He knew that a reporter couldn't be expected to know his religion. Bryce thought it was a "clown question" because the reporter asked him
what brand was his favorite beer. The question inferred that Bryce had been drinking alcohol illegally in the USA.
It's like asking a married man
"How often do you beat your wife?"
