Rockies deal Wilson to NationalsDENVER -- The Colorado Rockies completed their first of two trades on Wednesday evening when they announced that they have finalized a deal with the Washington Nationals. Colorado traded OF Preston Wilson and cash considerations to the Nationals in exchange for RHP Zach Day, OF J.J. Davis, and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Day will be added to the Rockies Major League roster and Davis has been assigned to Class AAA Colorado Springs.
Day, 27 posted a 1-2 record with a 6.75 ERA in five starts this season before landing on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 26 due to a hairline fracture in his right radius, suffered May 23 against the Reds in Cincinnati. In a rehab assignment with Class AA Harrisburg, Day logged a 1-0 record with a 2.77 ERA in three starts while walking one and striking out 10.
Selected by the Yankees in the 5th round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft, Day spent his first five seasons in New York's chain before being traded to Cleveland along with OF Ricky Ledee and RHP Jake Westbrook in exchange for OF David Justice on July 25, 2000. He began part of the 2001 season with the Indians before being shipped to the Expos in exchange for OF Milton Bradley on July 31, 2001.
Davis, 26 started the season with the Nationals as a reserve player but was sent to Class AAA New Orleans in early May. Davis was batting .282 with 12 home runs and 31 RBI in 51 games with the Zephyrs this season.
The 8th overall selection by Pittsburgh in the 1997 First Year Player Draft, Davis spent eight seasons with the Pirates organization before being traded to the Nationals in exchange for OF Antonio Sucre on November 24, 2004.
This season marked Wilson's third year with the Rockies organization after being acquired in 2002 from the Florida Marlins. The 30-year old played in 71 games for the Rockies this season, starting 69 contests all in center field. He posted a .258 batting average with a team high 15 home runs and 47 RBI.
