Pursue no free agents outside of LaRoche.  Wait to see who gets injured in the first half, reevaluate needs near the trade deadline and act accordingly.

Why?

Why?

because we're not the yankees and loading up on huge contracts for Greinke, Hamilton, or Bourn will probably come back to bite us sooner rather than later

So it's either "no free agents" or "huge contracts?"

if you're talking about the kind of names being flung in this thread (primarily Greinke and Bourn), yes. I doubt anyone is saying we'll pass on bench and bullpen

You would think after that albatross contract that we gave Werth, people would be a little bit leery on throwing out cash for the hell of it.

Granted this team is on the brink of a World Series contender...it just is poor judgment to just sit back and throw money at guys like Hamilton (who is a choke artist and drug addict) or Bourn ( guy who is only good for his speed).

Michael Bourn ain't worth 100 million. No freaking way.

Look for pitchers if you are going to piss away money like that. Even then I don't want a starting rotation that costs 30+ million after Stras Gio Zimmermann and (insert random free agency pitcher).

This years market is pretty crappy for effective cheap but solid players.

For the hell of it? Werth was a flipping stud this past year. More albatross contracts!

There's a middle ground.

Yea I'm confused. Werth was a beast this year. If it weren't for that freak wrist injury, he would've had a great season. He has done wonders in that leadoff spot. Granted, it's a SSS but I think he can do it again next year.

Also, Hamilton's name is still thrown around when the Nationals are talked about... ewww

You know that isn't true. His abbreviated season produced a higher average and an OBP. His slugging is down but I attribute that to a weakened wrist. IF he reverts to his career norms for 2013 I will be happy. He is an average RF and I see him being moved to LF sooner rather than later.

You've always had something against Werth. I feel like you need him to have an ALR season to consider him decent.

why are you confused? Its possible to see that he's a great player now and still dread the out years when he's 37/38 years old and sucking up 21 million per. We can afford a few of those, but taking on another when there is no huge gaping hole (remember right before werth?) isn't the best idea.

He adjusted his plate approach because of his wrist and was perfect in the leadoff roll. I loved our lineup when he got back.

His average and OBP were in line with his 2010 season btw. You can't chalk that up to a shortened season.

Errr, "Yeah I'm confused" is in reference to some people regretting Werth. I think it's up in the air for discussion. But then again I have my opinion and others have theirs.

werth to me is a trade off, if we win while he still performs, he's worth it. Another playoff run with him hitting we'll, and I'll view it as a positive. I just don't think the team should enter into too many of those deals, because carrying 21 million in dead weight is very different than carrying 40 or 60

I'd love Hamilton in a 3-4 year deal. Push Morse to first for now, you can go righty-lefty-rightylefty-righty 1-5, and have one of the game's premier run producers in the middle of it.

Do not want Bourn.

J. Upton is the dream.

Greinke will cost too much, but that's the big, swinging dick move befitting a burgeoning "monster" that firmly puts us top tier for the next decade.

Look, we probably have to get moderately better on paper just to have a chance at 95+ wins this time around, given the good fortune (health) we had with the rotation. Nothing is guaranteed. Again, I think Rizzo goes big here.

I want to give some huge free agent at 5 year deal. That way he'll come off the books at the exact same moment Werth does and we'll feel like we have unlimited money to sign everyone!

Honestly, I'd rather have Hamilton. I see hitting as way more of an issue for us going forward than pitching.

Just re-sign LaRoche. Get the production without the headaches.

Like the 2012 Angels?  I don't want anybody except for AdaMVP LaRoche and another innings eater like Jackson.

That could happen without Greinke, too. I don't necessarily want Greinke, especially at his price, but I'm enamored with the idea of cementing our place in the landscape. Upton would accomplish that, too. We *can* take on some salary without going suicidal.

All that aside, we do need ALR back.

Absolutely, I just get nervous when people start penciling playoffs and division titles for the next decade.  I am in violent agreement with you regarding landing a big fish and making the statement of "we're here to stay" though, I'm just leery of giving some of these guys more than five years of guaranteed money with JZimm and Strasburg not locked up long term.

Tweet from Ken Rosenthal: GMs last night dined at home of Nats owner Ted Lerner. "After seeing it," one GM said, "I think they are getting Hamilton AND Greinke."
