Before my time, but what I gather is that is Air Zimmerman drooling over his man, Elijah.  It has become the more universal symbol for slobbery love for a Nat.

The smiley was created by me. We had a poster named Air Zimmerman who would go 'boy' crazy all over Elijah Dukes, let alone a few others. So now its universally used by everyone when something good happens that they can drool over or if they want something.

I.E. I want Beckett in this rotation next year. Can you imagine? :az: :az:

I figured, at least Klej is made up of consecutive letters in his name.

someone just pulled a random series of letters out of his middle name, for absolutely no reason at all.

his nickname could have easily been Eikl or Ejoh.

What does it mean to Patterson somebody?

the namesake to this is John Patterson. in 2008, Patterson was supposedly coming back from forearm surgery. for all intents and purposes he was basically guaranteed a slot in the rotation, and was supposedly fully healthy, and just needed to get back into the rhythm of pitching. The team never gave any indication otherwise that his job was in any kind of jeopardy, even though he wasn't pitching as well as expected. as far as anyone, fans, media were concerned, he was just working his way back and was expected to start the season as the Opening Day Starter.

then suddenly and abruptly, he was released.

afterwards, within an argument about another player, it was suggested (by NOTLD i think), that the Nats should, and I quote, "PATTERSON HIS ASS!"

thus, Pattersoning was born.

Hill got fully Pattersoned.  Dukes had a lot of off-field factors on top of his ST crappery.

It makes me feel like a grizzled veteran to know what all these mean, and to have been around back in the old days (can't really call them good, not much good about them).

This is a great idea JMADIV, thanks for implementing it.
I know there are numerous times I did not "get it" - the inside joke - and even today -so this is a good reference thread for all new posters and even some not-so-new posters -like myself.  Hope we can keep it permanently as a category.

It's a tribute to the fact that he makes so many errors in his columns, including misspelling the names of players on occasion.

In his very slight defense, there is no editing of his columns, and time pressure to post them, so obviously he's rushing to get them in.  Still, if he only reviewed them superficially he'd still find things like the Nats actually playing in a 5 team division, not a 6 team division.  We have a thread where his gaffes are chronicled.

One time he said our third baseman was "Adam Zimmerman," and that Chase Headley was "Chad Headley." Another time he reported that the Nationals won a game when, in fact, they lost. Etc. But mostly because of his inability to spell Nats' names.
