Keeping the other team scoreless was more important than scoring ourselves. Even if John had made an out we would have still scored the go ahead run. and he would have pitched a scoreless 9th to preserve the victory.

Morgan, who's been hot, could have gotten on base and then our chances of scoring would have been pretty damn high. I would have made the same move.

It was the correct baseball decision. We had been anemic at the plate all day and needed all six outs of offense instead of 5 had Lannan been allowed to hit. Morgan popping out has nothing to do with the decision since that came afterward (obviously).

fair enough. Lannan was 2/2 on the day.

I could understand the move if we had a shut down closer to go to but we have Macdougal who is a retread with twice as many walks as Ks.

If all he's going to do is throw fastballs... he's gotta do a better job of locating.

keeping the other team scoreless was more important. Lannan was cruising.

No, it was equally important with scoring a run or more.

even if we had left Lannan in the game we would have still taken the lead. And his chances of pitching a scoreless 9th for the win are much greater than Macdougal's.

Manny Acta who is a fool himself would have left Lannan in there.

I just explained why that wasn't the case.

the anemic offense had nothing to do with it. Our chances of winning the game were greater with Lannan still in the game.

Having Morgan PH for him and bringing in MacDougal to pitch the 9th was not worth the risk.

Lannan had only allowed 1 run in 8 IP. MacDougal allowed 1 run in 1 IP in the 9th.

it was the wrong move and I hope the reporters grill Riggleman in the presser.

Would it have been possible to, for example, move John Lannan to second base, pinch-hit Nyjer Morgan, and then in the top of the 9th bring in Anderson Hernandez and make Lannan the pitcher again? I guess you'd have to wait until it was the pitcher's turn to bat again, eh?

Dude, that's only in hindsight. As of the 8th inning, MacDougal had not blown a single save all year. Bringing him in was the same risk as leaving in Lannan.

Yes, we could have left Lannan in there and we still would have scored the run. But that's not the point. It made sense AT THE TIME to pinch hit a hot hitter w/ a lot of speed for the pitcher w/ no outs.

Yeah, with the Nationals that would be a dumb assumption to make.

Unfortunately that information was not available at the time to Riggleman.
