It does give the Nats leverage to acquire Elvin Ramirez.

i just hope leading up to the season we don't hear rizzo/lerner talk about offseason acquisitions and include Ollie with Werth/Ankiel/Gorzelanny.

Picked up some other guy off waivers from the Braves too.

Nationals Claim Lee Hyde
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [March 23, 2011 at 3:13pm CST]
About an hour after agreeing to sign Oliver Perez, the Nationals added another left-hander from another division rival, claiming reliever Lee Hyde from the Braves (Twitter link). To create roster space for their new addition, the Nationals placed Stephen Strasburg on the 60-day DL.

The Braves selected Hyde in the fourth round of the 2006 draft and he underwent Tommy John surgery the following year. The 26-year-old Georgia native pitched 60 2/3 total innings at Double-A and Triple-A last year, posting a 3.41 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.

Baseball America did not rank Hyde among the top 30 Braves prospects before the 2010 or 2011 season.

I have not a clue. Our AAA/AA teams are already oversaturated with pitchers as it is.

They can offer to pay some of Perez's salary in order to keep Ramirez.

He's a lefty and under 30 years old. That's enough to sign him to a minor league deal even though he sucks.

Left-handed pitching is such a commodity that there's no harm in giving him a look in the minors. Some of you are acting like he is going to be the opening day starter.

To our 50 man AAA pitching staff.

Rate the Nats are going A Ball will be filled with 27 year olds because there's no space in AA or AAA.

Or they can say that with Ramirez on the 25 man, Perez will remain in the minors. All they have to do is add Perez for one day and the Nats will be on the hook for the league minimum. $400K > $000K. Most rule 5 guys aren't worth $400K so the Mets may bite.

Yes, because Perez has a major league deal and will be on the 25-man

But no, the rotation is going to be pretty crappy, I fear.

What does Lee Hyde have to do with Stephen Strasburg? Who the hell is Lee Hyde and he certainly isn't on the 40-man roster so why is Stephen Strasburg even mentioned here?

If he was claimed off of waivers he has to be put on the 25 man, since he has options still he can be sent to AAA.  Therefore, he essentially is taking Strasburg's spot on the 40 man.

Again, who the hell is Lee Hyde and why would you sign him to anything other than a minor league contract?  Anything that has LEE HYDE even sniffing a major league roster is a bad idea.

This is why this is one of the worst run franchises in sports, things like this.

Let them.  It's a minor league deal for almost no money and even less commitment to him and his old pitching coach who actually was his coach when he had success is in our system.  Chances are he's gone by the end of June, but there's virtually zero risk here for the Nats.

Read Nathan's post if you want to know who he is.  Since he has never been on an ML squad, he IS on a minor league deal.  All this cost the Nationals is 25,000$.  They can cut bait with him whenever they want with almost no consequence.
