I want 100. Anything less is a disappointment at this point. It's time to stop lowering our expectations! This team is for real!

I don't really care what the final number is as long as we hang on to that #1 spot, that's more what I'm concerned about.

I am so frickin annoyed that the #1 overall seed has to start the playoffs on the road for the division series. First playoff game in generations and we'd have to start on the frickin road? On what planet does the best team in baseball only get 1 guaranteed frickin home playoff game?

Sigh, sometimes I think it would be better to finish right behind the Reds and start the playoffs at home against the Giants then to get the number 1 seed and have to start at that craphole Atlanta or worse frickin Pittsburgh or St. Louis

Look, I get it, we're awesome on the road and maybe for this team it's even better to start on the road because the home crowd would be so amped and everyone would be nuts - but DAMN - what about the CHILDREN!

I'm not lowing my expectations, I am setting goals. I want 100 or more. I don't think I'll be disappointed this season. last season the disappointment was being just one lousy game under .500 which we would of had if that lousy postponed game was played.

Theoretically, if this happens and if the Nats sweep NLDS and win NLDS in 4 or 5, we only get 3 home playoff games before the WS;  whereas the top WC team could easily get 6-7 home playoff games if it wins the WC game and the NLDS.

Think it's only for the NLDS.  Once they go to the NLCS, top seed gets games 1, 2, 6 and 7.

Maybe I am wrong, but if Nats are top seed, and sweep the NLDS and win NLCS in 5, it could be:
NLDS
Away - W
Away - W
Home - W

NLCS
Home - W
Home - W
Away - L
Away - W
Away - W

That's 3 home games.

That's right.  You used "NLDS" a lot, I got confused.  Personally, not expecting to sweep anyone, frankly, not even expecting to win NLCS in only 5, if we're fortunate enough to get there.  That said, the lower the number of home games means we probably did really well.  If it happens on the road, then so be it.

Also, I think this arrangement is for this year only since it was put together relatively late in the process.  I could be wrong about that, though...

See, DPM, we're not in DC, so it doesn't affect us.

You are right about that.  I was only talking about what could happen this year, which would be great in terms of moving on to the NLCS, but would stink for people wanting to get to home games during the playoffs.

At 85-52 the Nats have 25 games left.  If they win at their current pace they will win 15.5 (16) of those games for a total of 101 wins.  Will they do it?

And can a mod add a poll to this asking that question since I apparently cannot?

At this point it comes down to whether we can win 15 of the last 25.  I think we'll win 14:
Marlins 2 of 3
Mets 2 of 3
Braves 1 of 3
Dodgers 1 of 3
Brewers 3 of 4
Phillies 2 of 3
Cardinals 1 of 3
Phillies 2 of 3

So, 99 wins.   Not bad.

I don't think you are giving us enough credit.  We always play the Braves tough.  We are 10-5 against them this year and 5-1 against them at Turner Field.  Also I think we can pretty easily take 2 of 3 from the Dodgers and Cardinals.  The wins and losses will get mixed up and obviously these things are incredibly difficult to project baseball being what it is but I can easily see 15 wins in there without a whole lot of difficulty.

Of course we can easily win 15. We can win 20.   And we can lose 20.   The last 25 games is simply no basis to predict what we will do the next 25.

I'm predicting 14.  I'm not giving us enough credit? I think 14 of 25 is damn good.

To elaborate: If we were going down to the wire - for a division title, or wild card, or best NL record - then we would be highly motivated to win every game.  But I don't think any of those will be in play, and I don't think 100 wins is sufficient motivation to play with the same intensity we've played with, over the remaining 25.  But Atlanta and St. Louis will be playing for their lives.  I can't see us doing better than 1 of 3 against either of them.

But only 3 of 9 against teams still in postseason contention?  Of the four teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today (Cardinals, Braves, Reds, Giants) the Nats are a combined 23-9 against them.  I think we can do better than 3 of 9 in those series.

Maybe St. Louis will be playing with more intensity by that point since it is the second-to-last series of the year and in their ballpark.  But the Braves series is coming up here pretty soon and is likely to be the chance for us to lock down the NL East.  I think both teams are going to be highly motivated to win that series.

Players are always playing for individual glory.  Unless Davey sits the starters, I don't see the team lowering its level of play down the stretch.

I think being sharp going into the post season is pretty motivating, especially for this team that will hear nothing but Strasburg this and Strasburg that.  That will be incredibly motivating for this team.  This team has been been so incredibly locked in since that collapse to Atlanta and they just got that scab picked today by one of the worst teams in baseball.  This team won't lack for motivation.
