Milledge Breaks Finger
« Topic Start: May 11, 2009, 01:31:18 PM »
In today's game in Syracuse

Quote
Syracuse outfielder Lastings Milledge fractured his right hand while attempting to bunt in the first inning of the Chiefs game against the Indianapolis Indians here at Alliance Bank Stadium on Monday morning.

No word on how long he'll be sidelined.

UPDATE: Dave Sheinin at NJ is reporting that it was his right ring finger that was broken, not his hand

Martin has had almost impeccable control, strikes out guys at a good rate, and has been on top of his game at AAA so far this year.

So why can't we find a spot for him on the ML club?  You mean to tell me that with Scott Olsen, Daniel Cabrera, and our crap-tastic bullpen, there's no room for Martin?

Or Stammen.

don't worry Knorr, we have MacDougal and Colome on the way. They'll be here by the end of the week.

Both gave up runs today in relief.

sucks for milledge, he had been playing better in a few games.  hope he has a full and speedy recovery.  damn both him and bernadina are out for a while :( our OF depth is thinning.

Sucks for the team too. If he would build up his stats we could trade him.

Milledge Suffers Broken Finger in Syracuse

Outfielder Lastings Milledge of Class AAA Syracuse suffered a broken finger while attempting to bunt in the first inning of the Chiefs' game today, the latest setback in the career of the talented but inconsistent player who opened the season as the Nationals' everyday center fielder and leadoff man.

Milledge, 24, broke the ring finger of his right hand, according to Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo, who is in San Francisco with the big league team but received a phone call about the injury. Rizzo said it was too soon to speculate about Milledge's prognosis, or whether the injury would even require a trip to the disabled list.

"I need to talk to the doctor and see where he's at," Rizzo said. "I really don't know anything else at this point."

According to the Web site Syracuse.com, which first reported the injury, Milledge was facing pitcher Ty Taubenheim of the Indianapolis Indians with a runner on first when he squared around to bunt. The pitch struck Milledge in the hand, and he writhed on the ground in pain as Chiefs Manager Tim Foli and team trainer Beth Jarrett rushed to his aid.

After a poor start with the Nationals, Milledge was demoted to Syracuse after just seven games and 24 at-bats. He was hitting .256 with no homers, four RBI and a .601 OPS in 21 games with the Chiefs entering today's game.

Hope he's okay.

Broken finger > broken hand. Good thing it wasn't his left hand or he'd be DL'ed for sure.

With J.D. Martin's injury and rehab, is starting or relief a better option (healthwise)?

I don't think that has much to do with it.  They're on the hook for D-Crap's salary anyway, right?  They also would only have to pay J.D. Martin league minimum or something in that range.

I don't think it would cost that much extra, if anything at all, to use Martin and send down the Crab.  I don't think cost has much to do with it.  It's just a stubborn attitude and inept management.

Completely self inflicted wounds, including not knowing how to hold a bat properly when bunting.

Surgery on his finger, out 6-8 weeks.

That gives him enough time to come back for the All-Star game.

And he broke his finger the TO way - the way that requires surgery.
