Usually i see my avatar and the words "unread replies" so you can see what threads are active etc.    I see the main banner but my avatar isnt featured.  Neither are the choices of unread threads or unread replies.

Another tip, tapping the round "DC" logo in the upper right also shows unread posts.  I find it a much easier target to hit especially on a phone.
