NWS ups its forecast for the D.C. area, 80 MPH wind gusts now possible, up to 10" of rain.

Heavy snows in West Va, including snowshoe and canaan valley.

Too bad it's not ski season :(

You kids and your video games. Back in my day we had to shoot pool and drink the old man's beer.  :old:

No pool table so we had to settle for ping pong. And drinking the beer was easier to spot so we dipped into the light rum that could be replaced with water.

I did that with my mom's tequila.  one drop of yellow vegetable dye and it looked perfect

That sucks for WV, in the really rural counties a foot of snow can mean school's out for a week with no way to clear the gravel and dirt backroads.

As long as one can dig a path to still and the rattlesnakes don't die, they'll be OK

Would I be an A-hole if I went to a restaurant right now, keeping people around to serve, or would I be a decent guy, giving them a chance to make a little money if they have to be there?

Nate at 538 discusses the potential impact on polling and the election.  He figures the Northeast / midatlantic may be tough to poll over the next few days.  he says most pollsters will correct for under-representing an an area of the country in national numbers.  he kind of gives up on speculating on in-state effects.

Hey, the owners commit to 365 days a year, no matter what, and put up staff in hotels to make sure they can get to the pub I will no longer plug until I get paid for their free adverts.  Actually, I was sort of thinking of the short walk to Caribou, even though I already had a delicious 22 ozs of Peet's Lion Mountain Keemun tea at home.

Fairfax county emergency response just sent out the following.

Quote
Hurricane Sandy is about to get worse.

Think of the derecho storm with high winds in June that lasted 24 minutes. The winds we’re about to experience beginning this afternoon are like the derecho, but they will last for 24 hours.

To paraphrase: Instead of 24 minutes of dangerous winds, it will be 24 hours of dangerous conditions.

We need you to stay off the roads and indoors as travel will become extremely dangerous with winds and heavy rain beginning this afternoon.

Several inches of rain and potential flooding could start happening. We’re beginning to get reports of flooded roads.

Have your battery-powered radio available and make sure your phone is fully charged if you lose power. We will share any shelter openings and other updates via our information channels such as the blog (www.fairfaxcounty.gov/emergency/blog) or through the news media.

Keeping the cell phone off now as long as I'm in the apartment.  No sense draining the battery if anyone who knows me can reach me on the landline (or PM me here!).

Dominion reporting 423 outages in Arlington (apparently in south central part of county) and about that many in Fairfax, but thus far not a lot of power-outages: https://www.dom.com/storm-center/northva.jsp (auto-refreshes constantly)

Onset of stronger winds should generally progress from east to west, with the strongest overall winds focusing on areas closest to the water like Annapolis. However, within any strong bands, extreme gusts are possible, and some of the models show locations like Leesburg and Dulles having the strongest winds in the whole area by late evening.

Great.

The hurricane will make landfall this evening, a hundred miles east of here. These are the outer wind and rain bands. 90 MPH winds at its core. The lowest barometric pressure ever recorded in a hurricane this far north. There are several dams in Montgomery County in danger of not just over-breaching, but complete failure (They're about to close Colesville Road).

Maybe it'll be a bust. But probably not.

technically it is.
